How I disable tearing and setup blender to work with CUDA GPU's
Posted by: Roy - 07-08-2018, 04:18 PM - Forum: Video Cards - No Replies

Hi all

So I was just install a fresh LL4 on my machine and ran into some tearing problems and also after installing Blender it couldn't find my CUDA enabled device.
So I dig into the internet a bit and found some solutions to my problems and wanted to share here for others struggling with that same situation and for future use Smile

My setup includes an Intel's Core i7 4820k and nVidia GTX970 (CUDE enabled with compute capability of 5.2) as well as dual Dell 2K monitors

How I got rid of the tearing issue
Before following this post, I was making sure I am using the recommended nvidia proprietary driver
[Image: GhFWqool.png]
And then installed nvidia-settings (or at least make sure it is installed)

Then I ran nvidia-settings as root and navigate to 'X Server Display Configuration' and clicked on "Advanced.." button on the bottom right
Now.. FOR EACH monitor I ticked "Force Composition Pipeline" AND "Force Full Composition Pipeline" then hit the "Apply" button and "Save to X Configuration File" button
Before I quit nvidia-settings I made a change in my display projection (with Super-P combo) to make sure it was setup correctly
The change was just to update the xorg.conf file while nvidia-settings still open
Then I came back to nvidia-settings and accepting reload of the xorg.conf file and again I was making sure for each monitor the two check boxes still ticked and then pressed "Apply" and "Save to X Configuration File" buttons ones more and hit the "Quit" button
At this point if I was rebooting, I was facing another problem where I can see the mouse working correctly but everything else was missing.. only the background and a part of one of my panel was presented and cannot be interactable, launching apps works but won't show anything.. only when pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 then CTRL_ALT+F7 fixed that issue..
So I had to attach a script on startup to assign my monitors to nvidia-settings

Code:
nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="DP-2:2560x1440_60 +0+0 { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }, DP-4.8:2560x1440_60 +2560+0 { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }"
Now I am enjoying a tear-free environment  ;D

How I got Blender to recognize my CUDA GPU
So after installing Blender I have noticed it cannot recognize my GPU device at all
So I dig again in the internet and found that (in this answer) for Blender to work properly with Nvidia and CUDA it requires nvidia-cuda-toolkit, nvidia-modprobe and the proprietary drivers installed
This time it was easier as I only had to run this in the terminal:
Code:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-cuda-toolkit nvidia-modprobe
Relaunch Blender and in the "User Preferences" -> "System" I found CUDA's available under "Cycles Compute Devices" and underneath that my GTX970 device was ticked

And that's it! Blender is now fully working in my tear-free environment and I am happy  ;D YAY!!
Hope you'll find it helpful

This laptop is Vista era.

Tried to install LL 4.0 on it this morning.

As soon as it started copying files from the live usb the installation crashed.

Mmmmm.......Could be a bad iso......Downloaded a fresh iso and made a new live usb.

Started copying files from live usb........Installation crashed.

Mmmmm.......Might be the old hard drive....?

Changed the hard drive.........Installation crashed.

Downloaded a LL 3.8x64 iso and installed from live usb.

A flawless install  Smile

My friend is very happy.......The laptop is flying on Linux Lite 3.8

But why would 4.0 not install.... :Smile [size=78%] [/size]

Pensor on Linux Lite 4.0 doesn't work correctly
Posted by: TuxInAGalaxy - 07-06-2018, 06:36 PM - Forum: Security & Bug Fixes - Replies (3)

After Pensor is loaded you should be able to click on the icon located on the panel and it should pull up your Temperature readings.  Instead of it doing that it brings up the entire monitor.  Which isn't terrible, but it isn't right.  Because I use that little icon to give me a quick glimpse of what my current cpu temps are.

How to set LL 4.0 language preferences differently for different users?
Posted by: Vera - 07-06-2018, 01:19 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

I recently switched language preferences on my LL 4.0 machine. I switched it to Esperanto. The only problem is that I can't figure out how to keep English as the language for the other 2 users on the machine. How should I do that? Currently when either of my other 2 family members log into their accounts, everything is in Esperanto, when they need to use English. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks so much.

  VirtualBox Linux Guest Additions
Posted by: greigpj - 07-06-2018, 04:32 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (2)

When I boot LinuxLite 4.0 in VirtualBox, The desktop is not displayed full screen even though it is set to such. I have to go to the VirtualBox Menu and select View > Show Full Screen (the VirtualBox window becomes smaller to surround the LinuxLite Desktop). I then Select View > Show Full Screen and then watch the screen flicker, then displays full screen.

Isn't a show stopper but just a tad bit irritating.

There are very few Linux Distros I recommend to Windows users and this is one.

  Kernel update
Posted by: BarryVG - 07-06-2018, 12:06 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (1)

Currently running Linux Lite 4.17 due to notices on Softpedia from Linux Lite that it was possible to upgrade to 4.17.  This followed later by notice that 4.16 had reached update 18 and was no longer supported, as was in April 2018 that 4.15 had reached update 18 and one should update to 4.16.  Well on 4.17 and now Virtual Box is not working.  Have reloaded that app a couple times and still not working.  Say to reload the dkms and the  modprobe, but modprobe is not in the system.  Any suggestions?

Can't install Linux Lite on Acer Aspire
Posted by: Gambler258 - 07-05-2018, 04:19 PM - Forum: On Topic - No Replies

Hello

As title says, I just can't install any Linux Lite or any other Linux distro on my Acer Aspire ES 17 ES1-732. The installation client runs ok up until grub2. It just gets stuck on "Installing grub2 package..."

I dissabled "Safe Boot" on my Bios, enabled again, etc. It has UEFI, which I think is made for Windows installations only, but it won't let me dissable UEFI.

My laptop is a 17.3" Acer Aspire ES 17 ES1-732.

N3350 @1.1 ghz
4gb DDR3L
1TB Toshiba HDD

This is just too slow to run windows 10, I get a lot of lags. So I was looking for a lighweight OS such as Linux Lite or Lubuntu.

  Bash Prompt
Posted by: dave61430 - 07-05-2018, 02:37 PM - Forum: Scripting and Bash - Replies (5)

Running a trial of LL on both a virtual machine and live boot, I cannot change the prompt. PS1="\$ " works on any other distribution I've used but not on LL. No error message, just no change. Even put it in .bashrc. I've checked shell and it is bash. Any ideas or is this a bug.
Currently using Mint 18.3, but seriously considering LL.

  Wireless Connection
Posted by: hackneydave - 07-05-2018, 02:25 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (3)

I have a Dell Latitude D610 running Linux Lite 3.8. My primary network connection is through a USB NIC dongle. See output following:

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0bda:8812 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8812AU 802.11a/b/g/n/ac WLAN Adapter
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 005 Device 002: ID 093a:2510 Pixart Imaging, Inc. Optical Mouse
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

The performance on the RTL dongle is good but when the system starts BIOS also starts up a PCI card with the old Dell b/g wireless connection. At restart, both of the wireless connections start and internet access slows substantially.  I have to manually disconnect the Dell card so that the dongle works properly.

I tried to switch off the WIFI in BIOS but then it also disables the RTL adapter and there is no network connection. Short of removing the original Dell WIF card, is there a way to disable it at login so that I just use the USB RTL adapter?

Thanks for your help.
