Installing Linux Lite 3.8 on eMMC flash memory
Posted by: pauloz - 04-18-2018, 01:03 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (22)

I recently purchased a budget laptop for my personal studies only. It’s an Ollee ML130S 13.3" laptop with Intel Apollo Lake Celeron N3350, 32GB eMMC flash memory and 4GB RAM. It came with Windows 10 Home, which I need for both apps.
My problem is the 32GB “drive” rapidly got full, so I decided to install a 128GB 2242 M.2 SSD, which it has provision for. I managed to transfer Windows 10 over to this SSD and so far so good, except I don’t have any audio – no solution as yet found. However, that’s not what I’m here for.
I deleted the partition on the eMMC (now unallocated space) and would like to install LL on the eMMC and use that for browsing, emails etc.
After reading the little information on the internet about these eMMC devices, it appears they are a handful to try and boot into, probably because they are soldered to the motherboard? I tried a live USB stick as well as the iso file burned on to a DVD to boot LL but in both cases, the devices were not recognised. There are diverse comments about how to change BIOS settings therefore I’m not confident how to proceed. The other issue is the BIOS information is different to what I’m accustomed to e.g under Chipset, four subheadings are mentioned I.e “North Bridge”, “South Bridge”, “Uncore Configuration” and “South Cluster Configuration”.

The Recovery and EFI System partitions for Windows 10 are still on the eMMC drive (Disk 1) and Windows 10 is installed on the SSD (Disk 0). These partitions can not be moved or deleted from the eMMC drive and I want to install LL on the Unallocated partition of the eMMC drive. I tried attaching a JPG file of Disk Management in Windows 10 but it appears that's not possible. Appreciate any help.

  Formatting a USB that has a virus on it
Posted by: JanetBiggar - 04-18-2018, 11:35 AM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (4)

I'm hoping someone knows the answer to this.  A friend has a USB that picked up a virus, he is using a PC running windows (not sure what version).  While I have a Mac computer I am reluctant to reformat it on my personal Mac just in case...

I still have one of the donated computers running LL 3.8 and wondered if I can reformat the virus infected USB on it without causing a problem on this computer.  This computer is only running LL 3.8 and NOT dual with a Windows OS.

IF I can safely do this on the computer running LL does anyone have any good clear instructions on how to do so?
Thanks,

  New Windows Appear on Panel Out of Order
Posted by: kris84 - 04-17-2018, 09:58 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (6)

I've used LL 3.2 in the past (on this same computer and for about a year) and after a short excursion trying some other distros, I decided to return to LL. I installed the 3.2 iso (64-bit) that I already had and upgraded from there to 3.8, installing all updates available as I went. I've almost got the system set up the way I want, but I notice that the items in the panel don't appear from left to right as I open them. For example, in this session, I've opened (1) Thunderbird, then (2) Thunar, which shows up to the left of TB, (3) Firefox, which shows up to the left of Thunar. You'd think this was just the reverse of what it should be, but when I went to my Documents folder and opened an odt file, it showed up between Firefox and Thunar. The order is Firefox, LibreOffice, Thunar, Thunderbird, but it should be: Thunderbird, Thunar, Firefox, LibreOffice. I've looked in the Panel Preferences, but can't see anything unusual there. Have I missed an important setting somewhere that's causing this?

  Best way to install Clamtk?
Posted by: GregO - 04-16-2018, 03:46 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (12)

I've searched the web with regards to this and have found different information on how to install Clamtk, and have tried to install it a few times and continue to get errors.

Is there a thread here on how to do it, or can someone tell me the best way to do it?

  New Desktop Computer and SSD Drive
Posted by: colin - 04-16-2018, 06:31 AM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (2)

I very recently bought a new desktop computer which came with a 500GB SSD drive and a mate of mine installed Ubuntu GNOME 17.10 on it (which i'm not very happy with). But only a couple of days ago i decided to run a "live" cd, Ubuntu MATE. My new desktop has an external CD/DVD drive and i selected this drive in order to run the "live" cd. After i had run the live cd i wanted to change the boot order in the bios back to what it was originally but there are two entries for the ssd drive and i just wonder if i have choosen the wrong one? The entries are:

a) ubuntu (PO: CT500MX500SSD1)
b) PO: CT500MX500SSD1

Would it make a difference if i choose either one?

Also, my mate installed the OS on the SSD drive.
But i would like to know if would it be possible to install an internal 1TB SATA hard drive
So that i could keep the SSD drive just for the OS + updates and everything else would
go on the internal sata hard drive. Hope i'm making sense here lol.

Thanks all

  Linux Lite Running 'LIVE"
Posted by: Rixter69 - 04-15-2018, 10:55 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (2)

I tried to run Linux Lite "live" and was plagued with constant lagging and extremely slow "bootup" and D/l-install speeds. For example, it took just over 3 mins. from initial start to 'operarting" screen. Made a mistake and 'updated" from pkg. mgr.; after 40 mins I quit. Even moving files from LL to another pendrive was excruciatingly slow. I used to have LM 17.3 on the same pendrive and never experienced these types of  maladies. So, I'm inviting discussion about running it 'live" as well as any 'fixes" I may be able to apply. I'm running LL on a Lexar 8 Gb 2.0 drive. (Please don't start in about the drive...it is working well and did so when 17.3 was installed). I think I'd like to run LL, but I don't know...maybe it's just not cut out for "live".

  Lite fails after latest update VM
Posted by: pob579 - 04-15-2018, 12:29 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (1)

Hi,
used Light in Virtual BOX. After latest update it fails after first rebot on "Started Update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes" line
Found info on web about the issue ...
Many mentioned that the problem is related to Video driver problem after update (different distros mentioned).
I followed this:
****
Just had this problem. CWO's solution helped, except because I'm running it as a VM the alt key combo didn't work; I booted into advanced mode, then recovery.
Ran apt-get -f install let it do it's thing.

Working distro!
******************
Unfortunately, not works for me after running      apt-get -f install    I get : 3 packages not needed and could be removed by autoremove... When try to autoremove it fails. But files mentioned for autoremove are not related to Video as mentioned by many on web. So I am lost... Don't want to switch to another distro (basically it may happen with any others as I saw).
Just to be sure... I installed fresh VM from lates Light ISO available and after first update the same story it fails...
Hope somebody here can help.

  Problemas con las traducciones de sistema
Posted by: ljimenez - 04-14-2018, 12:15 PM - Forum: Spanish [Spanish] - Replies (1)

ljimenez@ofiteclj:~$ apt-get update
Reading package lists... Done
W: chmod 0700 of directory /var/lib/apt/lists/partial failed - SetupAPTPartialDirectory (1: Operation not permitted)
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/
W: Problem unlinking the file /var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin - RemoveCaches (13: Permission denied)
W: Problem unlinking the file /var/cache/apt/srcpkgcache.bin - RemoveCaches (13: Permission denied)
ljimenez@ofiteclj:~$ sudo apt-get update
[sudo] password for ljimenez:

Al hacer cualquier ajuste o instalación de programa vía consola me da este error:

perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
LANGUAGE = "es_VE:es_ES:es_MX:en",
LC_ALL = (unset),

LC_ADDRESS = "es_ES:en_US:en",

LC_NUMERIC = "es_ES:en_US:en",
LC_PAPER = "es_ES:en_US:en",
LANG = "es_VE.UTF-8"
    are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to a fallback locale ("es_VE.UTF-8").

Por favor pueden instruirme en que debo hacer para resolver esto?

Gracias.

  Installer ubiquity crashed during installation
Posted by: rowo - 04-13-2018, 08:29 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (6)

I installed linux-lite-3.8-64bit.iso and all went good until ubiquity crashed. I'm not sure if the error report was send.
After that I tried to first update/upgrade the live system but it turned out that it wouldn't succeed because there was no more space left on /

Luckily I could start Linux Lite after applying grub-mkconfig and grub-install on another installed Linux distro.

BTW, why are image files not allowed as attachments?
