Linux Lite does'not start after I've installed another distribution
Posted by: JohnD - 04-10-2017, 10:07 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (3)

It's a long story of last saturday and sunday. I try not to bore you -- and don't tell the whole story.

I've upgraded an older Linux version -- some years not used -- on the same hard drive with Linux Lite. After this I was not able to start Linux Lite. Something like "There is not such a file" comes after selecting Linux Lite in the grub menu.

Then I've installed a new Linux to test it and to get a clean system for recovering Linux Lite: Emmabüntus. During installation of Emmabüntus there was a weird problem. This was why I deleted the swap partition [tt]/dev/sda10[/tt]. Linux Lite was at [tt]/dev/sda11[/tt]. Now Linux Lite's partition is shown as [tt]/dev/sda10[/tt], But I can not open it.

I'm not able to mount the partition of Linux Lite from Emmabüntus Linux. But it was not touched by any access of mine.

Code:
john(at)pegasus ~
$ sudo mount /dev/sda10 /media/linux_lite/
[sudo] password for john:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda10,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error

In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so.
john(at)pegasus ~
$  dmesg | grep sda10
[    2.878049]  sda: sda1 sda2 sda3 sda4 < sda5 sda6 sda7 sda8 sda9 sda10 sda11 sda12 sda13 sda14 sda15 >
[20415.691094] EXT4-fs (sda10): VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem
[118250.361243] FAT-fs (sda10): utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT filesystems, filesystem will be case sensitive!
[124913.549921] FAT-fs (sda10): utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT filesystems, filesystem will be case sensitive!
john(at)pegasus ~

What might be the reason, that Gparted says, it does not know the file system of the partition on which Linux Lite is installed?

Code:
john(at)pegasus ~
$ sudo tune2fs -l /dev/sda10
tune2fs 1.42.12 (29-Aug-2014)
tune2fs: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda10. Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.
john(at)pegasus ~

What is the crap with those magical number? Who the heck has changed it?

Regards
JohnD

SECURITY SOPHOS - reported infection - False positive??
Posted by: newtusmaximus - 04-10-2017, 09:47 PM - Forum: Security & Bug Fixes - Replies (9)

"2017-04-10 21:11:41: savscan.log          On-demand scan details: master boot records scanned: 0, boot records scanned: 0, files scanned: 62838, scan errors: 165, threats detected: 1, infected files detected: 1
2017-04-10 21:11:41: log.threat            Threat detected in /usr/bin/lite-info: Linux/EncPk-BE during on-demand scan. (The file is still infected.)
2017-04-10 21:11:42: savscan.log          On-demand scan finished.!

First time running Sophos . savscan /    to scan all content.    Purpose to ensure any files I forward to colleagues are not infected - Files may have been created/sourced from non secure sources /pcs

This report came up.  Unsure of its relevance?
Advice/thoughts appreciated

https://www.sophos.com/en-us/threat-cent...Pk-BE.aspx

UPDATE

In attempt to remove "threat"  witn "savscan -remove" SOPHOS is asking whether "Proceed with removal of /usr/bin/lite-info ([Y]es/[N]o/[A]ll) ? No"
I presume this suggesting the removal of the whole lite-info??  In doing so what effect would that have on the rest of the LL3.2 64 bit operating system on this pc??

FURTHER UPDATE
The above information is from a scan of my desktop HPdc7700p  running what was LL3.2 64 bit and this morning upgraded to 3.4 64 bit.  Virus still detected after this morning's upgrade.

I have this morning loaded SOPHOS  onto the family Fuji si1520 and done a full scan with latest virus library.
Again the same outcome      "Threat detected in /usr/bin/lite-info: Linux/EncPk-BE during on-demand scan

Removal of this "threat" on the  Fuji Si1520 failed using " sudo savscan / -remove"

UPDATE
Second attempt at removing threat on the Fuji Si1520 was successful . Resulted in removal of the lit-info file - Will see what adverse effect the removal of the file has on the further running of LL3.4 64bit on that machine.  Removal of the file was chosen as an alternative to disinfection as the latter would not have repaired any "infected" area of that file.

This morning loaded SOPHOS onto the Fuji3405 machine  (running LL3.4 32 bit) , updated virus library and "sudo savscan / "  No virus detected

SUMMARY - Virus detected in lite-info file on both of the LL3.4 64 bit machines -  Not aware that any files have been shared between the two machine - although there might have been.    Things in common.  Both machines upgraded with additional ram  and LL3.2 64bit iso (downloaded  24/03/2017) and burned onto DVD used.  Both systems subsequently upgraded to LL3.4 64bit  Looking further for any other common factors - software downloads etc

Urgent help please on significance of findings, and any ideas as to where from the "infection" originated  Thank you

ROBLOX: is there anyway to get this working in LL?
Posted by: m654321 - 04-10-2017, 08:53 PM - Forum: Games Support - Replies (5)

ROBLOX is a popular browser-based game that only appears to be able to be played through a Windows OS, and I can't find anything online suggesting that it can be played on a browser through Linux? It is one of my children's favourite games.

I have tried playing it in Win10 set up as a virtual machine but this didn't work - most gaming doesn't work in VM. So, have had to resort to a standard Win10 install just to play this game!

Any ideas or experience in getting ROBLOX to run in LL (or Linux generally) is really appreciated. As always, many thanks for any feedback.

Where is the install file? Win10 64bit
Posted by: PeterLinuxLit - 04-10-2017, 01:25 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (10)

I have downloaded Linux Lite 64bit for ASUS computer more than once.  I want to install Linux Lite and delete Windows 10.  Where is the install program?  Every file I click on causes Win10 to ask what to open it with.

I have created a win10 recovery USB stick just in case.

What file do I click on and how do I get the installation process started?

Thanks

Installing LL 3.4 on Lenovo Yoga 710, i7/7th gen
Posted by: CaperAsh - 04-10-2017, 03:12 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (7)

[size=1em]From a thread about Legacy boot versus new method:

First, edited Grub file (a first) and now new LL3.4 installation boots up - fast. To effect this, altered a line using instructionsGRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="modprobe.blacklist=i2c_hid"(from page: [color=rgb(51, 68, 102)]https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/forums/v3_1...958/page/2[/color][/size] )
Boots great now.The Touchscreen doesn't work (which is fine for now)The network/internet is not working well. Intermittent connection, often disconnects.
The panel items are strange too, sometimes when connected not showing any wifi connections (I only have wifi here), sometimes refusing to show the only one which works. Also showing 5 bars even when no activity possible.
I used this page to tune up my current (dying) HP which was also intermittent:https://mityer.khdlhfjijfrupr.tk/forums/insta...connects)/
I have a Realtek on that laptop and decided to take a chance since it's dying anyway. It made a huge difference. But the new Lenovo 710 is not Realtek (I don't think). It is a Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac.After that on the lspci readout:Unassigned Class: [ff00] Realtek Semiconductor RTS5229 PCI Express Card Reader.I will try to post the lspci output, but the new laptop is busy very slowly downloading Chrome and until finished and set up over there cannot access that output. I am hoping for help to get this connection working properly. Hopefully now the booting issues are resolved, even if the graphics situation cannot improve much until there are chip updates in a week or so, if I can get a solid connection then will be willing to work with the new machine, which I like. And I LOVE the way LL looks on this much nicer screen resolution.

  Few icon questions
Posted by: bitsnpcs - 04-10-2017, 01:01 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (5)

Hello,

I have few icon questions, if you can help with any of them please.

I am using the Faenza icon theme, I want to use the Thunderbird and Firefox icons from

Menu>All>Appearance>Icons>Gnome default Gnome theme

whilst still using the Faenza theme.

When I click in the panel>panel preferences>items> select thunderbird (or firefox)>properties>click icon
The icon is not shown as available to change it.

How do I change it ?

I have tried some different icon sets, the last few days but have not found one that produces the look.

[SOLVED]

*******

The XFCE Menu icon, I also wanted to change to the new feather, by making a duplication of the button editing to swapping the feather over using Gimp, I have tried right clicking the Menu icon
Properties>click icon>
discovered it is called xfce4-whiskermenu, I cannot locate this icon using Fsearch, I need it to get the right button image, and also to know where to place the new version so I can select it using the select an icon window that results from clicking the icon in Properties>click icon

[SOLVED]

********

Fritzing has no icon in the menu, how do I edit this to add an icon ?

[SOLVED]

***********

Etcher lives in a folder in the Home folder, it does not display the Etcher icon, it has the Gear icon.
When I load a iso, it then has the Etcher icon, temporarily.
I would like to make Etcher have the Etcher icon permanently, and I would like its shortcut to live in the Whisker Menu in Multimedia category like the dvd burner software does.
Also so it lives in the Linux equivalent of "program files" (usr/share ?) rather than in the Home folder.

  Goodbye Win10, Hello Linux Lite
Posted by: Derfdog - 04-09-2017, 10:48 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (7)

Got tired of Windows and their blessed updates that seem to break stuff.
Been trying different distros for the past 3 weeks going through about 6 different versions, really liked Mint but it seemed so slow on my system.  Had high hopes for Puppy Slacko 64 bit because it was fast, but I was having graphic issues that could not be resolved as a newbie linux person.
Tried Lite 3 days ago and it clicked.

Thanks

LL 3.2 64bit Attempted Upgrade to 3.4 - States already on latest release
Posted by: newtusmaximus - 04-09-2017, 10:06 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (10)

Have been running  a fresh install of LL 3.2 64 bit.  Installed  just prior to 3.4  final release

Confirm updates installed before upgrade attempt.

However this desktop HPdc7700p is not playing ball.  Just gone through cycle again - update then attempt upgrade.  Says running the latest release.

Not a problem.  Just pointing it out just in case there is a bug somewhere.
