  Slow Shutdown
Posted by: then00b - 06-23-2016, 07:58 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (5)

Hello there! My laptop used to shutdown very quickly, but suddenly it slowed down. Is there anyway to bring back the quickness of it? Thanks! :-\

another fine mess -- removed a line from repository - now dysfunctional
Posted by: logoiccc - 06-23-2016, 06:34 PM - Forum: Other - No Replies

I removed what I thought was a duplicate from  my  repository/other  software /  list - now I can't sudo apt-get update -- and I don't even know what it was I removed. in future  will take note  of such things.

Initially this morning I was working and researching  on how to remove a duplicate  uninstalled  package  that showed up in my CLI  ever since attempting  to  install the game Smoking Guns a couple of days ago . I researched and found out how to  remove  this duplicate  successfully and along the way was sidetracked  into attempting to  install an app and ended up with a missing  key.  I experienced  a missing key after my recent  install of  LL 2.8  last week - but researched  forum and web and easily corrected that problem . Since  then , loving LL - totally seamless  integration with  everything I've installed and every sys preference / change I've made ...  until  today  .  I think what I removed may have  had ubuntu.net  in it's address line and I don't see any like that now.
I would appreciate  some help with  this .

after more web search  I think this may have to do with keyrings  but not sure yet .

please bear in mind I am not bash , code, scripting  etc.  literate  .    self learned / taught ---  never had benefit  of being  around  other computer  users or interacting  etc.  -  construction background -  no IT

also please let me  know what form , etc. to make any  attachments / visuals  ; ie.  , leafpad ? , copy and  paste from terminal  and so on . I do know about imgur .    just not completely sure about forum protocol
thanks very much ,  sorry for all the bloat

Kernel update error Linux Lite 3.0
Posted by: BlueFox - 06-23-2016, 02:05 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (10)

I installed  Linux Lite 3.0 yesterday. it updated good for the first few times. Then got a message
couldn't fetch the package cache  then another message. with the fix below.

Code:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

after running I got the report below:
One of my questions is, Do I have other problems with the updater that need to be addressed?

VLC doesn't maximize properly - blue frames
Posted by: erve02d0 - 06-23-2016, 02:17 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (14)

When I maximize the VLC screen, i.e. double click inside the VLC window, VLC does expand to full screen, but everything outside of the original size becomes blue. How do I fix this? Also, the actual "movie frame" covers everything else, i.e. if I open the terminal and it intersects with VLC, the "movie frame" is always in front.

Problem is with an LL-only desktop (and LL-only laptop, but that's not as important). Hooking up the screen (brand: HP) to my five years old Windows 7 laptop it works flawlessly.

(Bonus question: where do screenshots go?)

  Live boot from USB fails
Posted by: openmind - 06-22-2016, 07:15 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (13)

Trying to install LL3.0-32 on a Dell Dimension 4100 configured with 512M RAM and 20GB HDD.  Machine has only CD ROM Drive so need to boot from USB so created bootable USB thumb drive using multibootusb.  Dimension 4100 BIOS lacks USB boot option so created plpbt.img 5.0.15 on 3.5" diskette.  Machine boots plop from the diskette and boots the USB image.  After selecting Linux Lite 3.0 32bit and then LL safe mode, the loader finds vmlinuz and initrd.gz and shows dots while loading the files.  After initrd.gz finishes loading, the screen fills with dots that are continually scrolling forever; after watching this for 30 minutes, pressing ESC aborts whatever is happening and provides a boot prompt.  Pressing ENTER at the boot prompt returns to the boot menu.  If regular Start LL is selected instead the system simply hangs after accessing the USB thumb drive for a while--no errors are observed.  Would anyone know what might be causing this behavior and whether or not there are any boot options that might allow proceeding with the install?  Selecting the Integrity Check without the "quiet splash --" options produces the same result (screen full of scrolling dots after loading initrd.gz).

LL3.0 wifi - problem with key
Posted by: Richard B - 06-22-2016, 10:36 AM - Forum: Network - No Replies

Hello,
I've tried to post this as a "bug" but can't get it to "take". Probably me. Anyway:

Problem establishing wifi connections.  Tests have been conducted using WPA/WPA2 PSK networks, 64bit LL3.0 and two systems:

  1. MSI U180 netbook with "Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) driver: ath9k"
  2. Dell Inspiron 1525 using an RTL8088CUS based dongle (rtl8192cu driver).
What happens is this:

  1. Click on network icon shows list of networks, including that wanted (SSID "visitors").
  2. Clicking on a network name causes request for the key which seems to be accepted but no connection is established. (At this point a file /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/visitors - opened as administrator - has been created but does NOT include the key.
  3. Network icon/Edit Connections permits the key to be added, after which connection becomes possible and the key shows in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/visitors
Problem occurs both during installation and on installed systems.

Am I alone in having this problem?

Regards,
Richard.

[FEEDBACK] 3.0 64 bit no FTP option in changing server in Repos
Posted by: aus9 - 06-22-2016, 09:24 AM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - No Replies

Hi

I may be completely wrong!

In going into menu -> system -> install software -> settings -> repos

I tried to change my repo to an FTP site in Australia and assumed....as I am a mere male heh heh that I should pulldown the box below and choose FTP instead of what was showing.
but the box has no pulldown?

So I checked an US ftp site and same issue as per image.

Anything to worry about?

Thanks for reading

Dell Inspiron 6400 Media Laptop 32bit Not shutting down
Posted by: Jim The Tyreman - 06-21-2016, 06:43 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (2)

Hi guys,

Anyone with any advice?

Just got an old Dell Free from my works I.T. guy for my daughter who is due to go into hospital at the weekend for quite a big operation. I've installed LL 3.0 and done all the updates and installed Kodi for her (The media buttons on the front of the laptop even control Kodi!!)

The only issue, doesn't shutdown properly? It goes through the motions and just hangs at a greyish screen and I need to press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds for it to power down.

Apart from the power issue, I'm VERY impressed with how LL has developed, it's been a good year or so since I've tried LL, I might just install it on my main PC!

Ant tips or hints would be most appreciated!

Re: Linux Lite 3.0 Final Released (Help Manual)
Posted by: torreydale - 06-21-2016, 05:35 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (1)

Help Manual > Install > Enabling TRIM on your SSD:

In the section instructing the user to edit /etc/rc.local, we see 3 instances where "fstrim -v" is added to the file, but there are 4 instances where "noatime," was added to /etc/fstab.  The number of these edits matched in the 2.8 Help Manual, but they don't here in the 3.0 manual.

I noticed this when following the instructions to TRIM my first SSD over the weekend.
