Only 3840 x 2160 and 0.0Hz appears in Display settings menu in Linux Lite 2.4
Posted by: Netuzist - 04-24-2016, 06:27 PM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (8)

Hi there folks,

A while back I updated several packages pertaining to Linux Lite installed in my modified chromebox with the i915 installed as active driver.  Time passed then I bought a Samsung Un50JU7100 UHDTV and now when I go to the display settings menu to lower the screen resolution because text and icons are tiny I can't because all the other screen resolutions are gone. What I would like is to restore this feature just like it was when I first installed Linux Lite 2.4 on this machine so that I can choose any screen resolution just as in the live usb.  If this is possible, please let me know if not just tell me why ?  Thanks in advance.  Smile

timekpr: inadvertently locked myself (admin user) out & can't boot - how to fix?
Posted by: m654321 - 04-24-2016, 10:59 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (6)

I use timekpr on my son's PC to limit the amount of time he spends on it: it works very
effectively.

To set his daily time allowance I have two accounts: admin user (me) and my son's account.
From the admin a/c I can set his daily time allowance for his account.

However, today I accidentally locked myself out of the admin a/c so am unable to get into the PC
at all.  As superuser, I attempted to inspect the following files in the terminal, as I have reason to
believe the timekpr file settings will be there...

Code:
gksu leafpad etc/security/access.conf
gksu leafpad etc/security/time.conf

However, all this comes up with is text which shows examples of settings that can be used. It doesn't actually
show the contents of the root files...

Thanks for any help in advance
Mike

How do I remove the stored boot options in NVRAM - command line or GUI?
Posted by: m654321 - 04-23-2016, 04:17 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (7)

My main laptop (Asus G750) appears to have NVRAM (non-volatile random access memory).

This seems to interfere with booting the computer following removal of the HDD or SSD containing the operating system, and swapping it for another drive with a different operating system.  This problem (and its solution) was previously discussed at https://mityer.khdlhfjijfrupr.tk/forums/tutor...y-enabled/ (see Section F – problem 1).  What I would like to know is how to avoid the above problem altogether. Put simply, is there a either a command line or GUI method for clearing NVRAM of its stored boot options, before I swap the the drives (containing the different operating systems)?

Many thanks in advance for any help on this one.

Mike

Systemback (using BleachBit) = bad Idea
Posted by: LinuxNoob - 04-22-2016, 07:32 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (13)

Well I just wanna give a heads up to people considering to use BleachBit and have systemback installed.

I found that bleachbit has done something to systemback on my system. It actually takes more than 20 min to load systemback. Not sure how to fix it but I been itching to install 2.8 LL.

Just wanted to let everyone know that after reinstalling systemback it still doing the long loading time thing.

Even after deleting all restore points the SystemBack is still taking forever to load (showing the drive working at 100%)

  No DNS cache
Posted by: paul1149 - 04-22-2016, 01:31 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (30)

I've been having slow Web page loading for several weeks now. Finally, I ran tests against a couple of Windows boxes, and isolated the problem to my LL box.

The status bar of the browser almost always hangs for a second or more on "Resolving host...". This doesn't happen on the other units. All units are set to get their DNS addresses from the local router, which in turn points to quality DNS services such as OpenDNS. My Linux box is on ethernet, and I've tried Windows boxes on both ethernet and wifi.

It seemed odd that this would happen even when I had visited the same domain just prior, so I began to suspect the DNS cache. I did a little research and ran the command sudo /etc/init.d/nscd restart, and got back: "command not found"

I ran service nscd restart, and got back "unrecognized service".

It seems that I don't have DNS cache running on this machine. That would explain the problem. Does anyone have any insight on how to troubleshoot or rectify this?

Thanks.

Virtual Box (Oracle) has gone AWOL
Posted by: jeanrouge - 04-22-2016, 11:18 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (3)

I had a space problem: Oracle VB stopped working with the message:-

Location: '/home/citrixmanager/.config/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml', line 1 (0), column 1.
/home/vbox/vbox-5.0.18/src/VBox/Main/src-server/VirtualBoxImpl.cpp[534] (nsresult VirtualBox::init()).

Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
VirtualBoxWrap
Interface:
IVirtualBox {0169423f-46b4-cde9-91af-1e9d5b6cd945}

I copied the files across to another directory
I uninstalled VB Rebooted and Reinstalled but I still get the same message.
I sure hope some out there know exactly what to do!
Jean
