Now I did it! Missing all Menu Items except Favorites and Recently Used

So I had some time on my hands today and was looking through my Whiskermenu on my old Acer AspireOne Netbook which is running LL 2.6 (which has been running LL for a year or more without any issues) and I found that after removing Google Chrome 32 bit browser (and replacing it successfully with Chromium), evidently there was a left over Google Apps entrie in the Internet section of the Whiskermenu that was nonfunctional. So I decided to remove it. When Right Clicking on the entry, there was not a delete option present, only Add to Desktop, Add to Favorites and Add to Pane I think.
So I did some research and found that I could go into /home/dan/.local/share/applications/ folder and I located an entry called Chrome-app-list.desktop and remove it, (I moved it to the trash can in case I needed it back) and sure enough, the dead entry was removed when I checked the Whiskermenu again.
I saw several other Google Chrome type entries with .desktop extensions in there as well, so I moved all of them to the Trash just in case I needed them back. I checked the menu and everything looked fine. I continued looking at menu entries and found an entry for Midori Speed Dial page which I clicked on and it opened a new blank page, so I decided to remove that entry by Right clicking on Menu>Edit Applications>Internet> and located the item, then accidentally double clicked on the check mark and my mouse jumped, so I'm sure I clicked on something else, but when I did, the Main Menu screen disappeared which I thought was odd. I then right clicked Menu>Edit Applications again to open the Main Menu to see if I had really unchecked the item and the Main Menu window would not open.
I then left clicked on the Menu button and to my surprise, ALL Menu Category entries were missing except Favorites and Recently Used, and both of those sub menu's were empty as well. The menu looks correct in every other way, and the blank entry window at the bottom is still there and the All Settings, Lock Screen, Switch Users and Log Out icons are still there and functional, but all of my other items are missing. I have no idea what I did, but it looks like it did it good...
Creating a new Menu Item in the task bar appears and acts exactly the same as the normal Menu button, so I removed it.
I attempted to reinstall the Whiskermenu using the apt-get install xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin, but that did not seem to change anything. So I'm at a loss as to where to go from here.
I can login as another user on the same PC and the menu works fine, however that user is rarely used, so of course the menu items are different than my main user.
Any suggestions would be appreciated...
Thanks !
SOLVED - UPDATE 10:30PM, Apr 2, 2016
After reviewing all of the obvious stuff, I was unable to get this resolved, so I decided to start comparing files between this Acer Netbook and another ASUS Desktop machine I built that is also running LL 2.6 (I have 4 PC's running Linux Lite at this time)
After about an hour of hunting, I found that the xfce-applications.menu file located in my /home/dan/.config/menus/ folders were different between the two machines. The file on the Netbook was 0 bytes in size and the one on the ASUS PC was 7.6kB in size. So I simply copied the file on the ASUS Machine to a shared directory on my home network and then logged into that shared folder from the Netbook. I copied the file from the shared folder and pasted it into the /home/dan/.config/menus/ folder on the Netbook and saved it.
I then simply left clicked on the Menu button and to my surprise, all of my menu items were back!!!! (Well, at least I think they are all there, I haven't gone through every single one of the items yet, but it looks like it did before everything disappeared. Also, the Menu>Edit Applications>Main Menu works again as well.
I'm one Happy Camper tonight for sure!!!
Anyway, if anyone else runs into this problem, you might try doing this or even install a basic version of LL on another hard drive, then go grab this file in your home directory and copy it to your problem PC.
Hope this helps someone else down the road.
Have a great day!

Why some files will not be executed, when software installation is downloaded? Is it because it is build for a different Linux?
I have readme file for some open source accounting software, I would like to try it, it says "Briefly, the shell command `./configure && make && make install'
should configure, build, and install this package." What this means, how to install?

I would like to know, do we need firewall and anti-virus applications on Linux systems? There are links for installing these applications, but is it safer to leave original system files without installing additional software?

Best version of WINE?

Hi,
I'm running LL 2.8 x64. I currently have WINE 1.7, 1.7-amd64 and 1.7-i386:i386 installed, in addition to winetricks, wine-gecko2.40, wine-geccko2.34-i386 and wine-mono4.5.4.
I'm not sure if all those are necessary. I think most of the secondary ones were requested by programs.
I see WINE 1.8 is available in the repository. And V. 1.97 has just come out, though it's not in the repository yet.
I'm wondering if it's a good idea to upgrade, whether I should leave well enough alone, or wait for LL 3.0 before making the decision. Any input would be appreciated.

Canon Pixma failure

I've always dreaded trying to get printers to work on Linux, and it doesn't help with old ones, even if they still can perform like new.
A few months ago I finally got my Pixma IP5000 working perfectly, connected to my Linux Lite laptop which runs LL 2.4 - the instructions in the LL manual, plus a lot of printer settings tweaking, all fine.
Just installed a new (refurbished) office desktop running LL 2.8, and connected the Pixma as instructed and the way it worked last time, but no luck now, it cannot print at all, things just stop in the queue with instant error messages. I have the troubleshooting txt file that results if that might help.
Any and all advice and suggestions welcome, I am baffled. Windows stopped supporting the printer drivers with XP, so I might cobble together a Virtual Box running XP again, but would prefer to return to the recent pleasure of everything running smoothly on LL.

Integrity of Virtual Machines & Upgrading from LL2.8 to 3.0

I've another question about VMs, looking ahead to June when LL3.0 is released.
When upgrading from LL2.8 to LL3.0 I will need to do a clean install as I've understood
that Lite Upgrade won't work when upgrading from one LL series to another. However, I want
my existing VMs to continue working in LL3.0. How do I ensure this?
Before you answer you will need to know that:
- I have two physical SSD drives in my PC, SSD1 and SSD2
- SSD1 is the primary drive, where LL is installed as has separate root & home partitions
- SSD2 is purely for data storage (including the VMs), its directories being symlinked to /home on SDA1
Many thanks again for your advice.

Missing Printer Driver Error Message Canon Image Class MF4570dw Printer

For some reason it seems that Canon Image Class printers are particularly difficult to install on Linux.
After completing the installation of Linux Lite 2.8 I went to the Help Manual and followed exactly the procedure outlined for installing Canon printers. Everything seemed to go well. As per the instructions, I then opened Menu → System → Install/Remove Software and searched for my printer name and – yup, there it was – Canon NF 4500w series CNUSB #1. Unfortunately, there is still no driver and I get the error message, “Missing Printer Driver”. For some reason, although the recommended printer driver has been downloaded, it's still not being detected, despite following the steps outlined above.
Fortunately, the remedy for this dilemma I found on the Ubuntu Forums. (See topic titled: “Re: Canon Imageclass MF4570dn printer with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS” at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2227343)
The most recent Linux_UFRII _PrinterDriver as of February 2016 is now version 3.10. I followed the instructions from the Ubuntu forums website above, except that when I got to the terminal command
tar -zxvf Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V280_uk_EN.tar.gz
I substituted 310 for 280.
Since I have a 32 bit system, I changed the next line as well to reflect that, so the following line became
cd Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V310_uk_EN/32-bit_Driver/Debian
After typing the command
ls
the two files that appeared were
cndrvcups.common_3.40-1_i386.deb and cndrvcups-ufr2-uk_3.10_1i386.deb
therefore, the next two command lines I entered were
sudo dpkg -i cndrvcups-common_3.40-1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i cndrvcups-ufr2-uk_3.10-1_i386.deb
I continued to follow the procedure as listed on the ubuntu forums site and restarted the CUPS.
When I got to the part that reads:
“we are looking for a reply like
lpd://172.23.2.72/CANON-MF4570dw”
Instead, my reply was
direct usb://Canon.MF4500w%20series?serial=01220B1185d&interface=1
direct usb://Canon.MF4500w%20series?serial=01220B1185d&interface=2
Following this I entered the command
sudo /usr/sbin/lpadmin -p Canon-MF4500w -m CNCUPSIR 4500ZK.ppd -v lpd://direct usb/Canon-MF4500w -E
In response to the above I got an error message:
Unknown argument l padmin: usb/Canon-4500w.
Totally frustrated with my continued lack of progress, I went back to the Add printer screen and noticed the option to print a test page which had not been there before.
Honestly, I just about fell off my chair when the printer printed it!
The Printer Test Page indicates the driver is: CNM4500ZK.PPD
I don't know why this has worked. Because I'm very new to both Linux and Linux Lite, I don't understand what the above commands mean but thought I would document what I've done here with the hope it might be useful to others.
