Boot up and shut down take forever
Posted by: stephen_kadry - 01-05-2016, 10:25 AM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (2)

I apologize if this has been addressed before, I couldn't find it if so.  I have found Linuxlite to be very slow to boot and shutdown.  Not referring to the GRUB part but the part with the "splash screen" where all of the services and what not are being loaded.  Is there any way to speed it up, i.e. a list of the bare minimum process needed to make the OS work.  By "work" I mean be usable right away (while I'm not new to Linux I'm not into working from command line, just the basics like installing software and updating not for the whole system.)

Should this not be LITE LOCKER?

Sorry if I'm being a stickler over this?

To start the new year 2016 with an experiment I installed Linux Lite 2.6 64bit version on my old MSI notebook. Everything seems to be working well and I will report details of the hardware (and any problems, if they should occur) soon.

I live in Germany and have been a Linux user for more than 15 years. I prefer distros that are easy on resources (because I only have older, cheaper computers  Tongue ) so Linux Lite looks like a good match for me!  8)

Have a great year, everyone.

Ciao,

Little Walter

Installing steam games to different drives.
Posted by: imitchell - 01-04-2016, 03:05 AM - Forum: Games Support - Replies (1)

For one reason or another, when I try to install a game in one of my different drives, I keep getting the message that says Failed to create new Steam library folder, anybody have a solution to this. Also, yes I have run the sudo chown -R user:user /media/user/"drive"/ && chmod -R 770 /media/user/"drive"/ command.

  Adding Fonts to LibreOffice
Posted by: Colin23erk - 01-03-2016, 10:40 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (5)

I wanted to get "Magneto Bold "font for LibreOffice and found that Fonts are part of LL
Not sure if this is a recognized method but it worked for me ,

Downloaded > Magnetob.TTF
and copied it Clipboard

Using Catfish I searched for .TTF
I then right clicked on a result showing the fonts folder and  > "Show in File Manager "
Then Paste into Folder

next time I opened LibreOffice it was in the list

  S3 Graphics Ltd. VT8375
Posted by: ATavares - 01-03-2016, 04:59 PM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (2)

Hello everyone.

Trying to bring a few old machines back to life and this is what one of them looks like:

CPU - AMD Athlon™ XP 2000+
GC - S3 Graphics Ltd. VT8375 [ProSavage8 KM266/KL266]
RAM - 1Gb

I have a problem and a question.

The problem:

Everything that seems to need any sort of graphical capability drags almost to a halt. Talking about stuff as simple as draging a window across the screen. Kind of stuff you usually see in Windows when you install the OS but still didn't installed the GC driver.

Tried to look arround for a solution but I didn't found any for this GC. What I found is a lot of people having trouble with VIA GC's but some threads are left abondoned before a definite  solution is presented.

Even though I can manage myself pretty well arround a computer, I'm kinda new to Linux and this problem sems to be, at the moment, beyond what I know about the OS.

I red in another thread that the information below may be useful to help solve my problem:

The question:
This machine will be available to a small group of people and it's main use will be accessing online content. So, another thing I'm wondering is how well it will be able to use stuff like Facebook or Youtube.

Any help is much apreciated.

  Extension webm
Posted by: LinuxNoob - 01-03-2016, 04:41 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (8)

I have noticed that downloaded video's from Youtube have appeared on my drives with the extension or Filename.webm and vlc does not recognize the new format.

I know this is not a LL issue but wondering if anyone has a solution to this now or should I wait for VLC to correct this?

Knowing VLC can play about almost anything I'm sure changing the extension will not make a difference.

Youtube always messing **** up.

  Could it be the driver?
Posted by: MarkBeardsley - 01-01-2016, 03:58 PM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (6)

Sorry about this but I need to explain a little bit of the background to this question.

Just for fun, I bought a Chinese made mini pc recently, the Tronsmart BJ19. It is built around the Intel Celeron J1900 chipset and I was thinking of using it for software development and the like. When I received the pc, I could not make it work with the VGA monitor I had at hand but found that it did function when plugged into an old TV set which had an HDMI port. Linux Lite 2.6 was installed successfully and then updated. Later, I bought a new monitor with VGA and HDMI ports and tried to plug the BJ19 into this; this is when the fun began.

Booting the pc up, I saw a GRUB screen and took the Linux Lite option only for the display to revert to black and for the monitor to tell me that it was not receiving a signal. Digging around the internet it seems there are a few people having similar problems; they can boot up the machine when the monitor is HD ready but not when it is fully HD. With Windows installations, it seems the problem is fixed by installing an updated driver and I wondered if the same solution can be applied in my case.

So, my question is, well questions are, how can I check to see which drivers I have installed? Next, how can I install different driver software? I understand that Intel themselves offer drivers that can be installed using an application they also provide. Does anyone have experience with this? What options do I have with regard to drivers and is there a 'preferred' solution?

Thanks in advance.
