  Tale of Woe
Posted by: Colin23erk - 10-21-2015, 07:13 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (2)

After a disastrous fortnight after being locked out of Windows 7 by Ransom-ware I now feel that it would have been better to have paid up rather than have all the difficulties I have encountered  trying to get my computer back to normal work  .
Summery of events

Tried changing Windows Password using various methods  - nothing worked
Reinstalled Windows - messed up Booting to Lite

Used Linux Boot Rescue Disk --  Lite boot Stalled

Saved Home on the understanding I could use it to get my settings back
Used USB drive to Install 2.6 assuming it would upgrade my 2.4  and allow Lite to load without Stalling
When I replaced the old Home in to Lite 2.6 my password would not work
I had to do a Reinstall using the USB drive .

Now I realize that I will have to load all my installed Programs and settings from scratch as the "Home" file does not contain any settings etc. Creating a /Home partition is virtually the same having a Data partition accessed by shortcuts in Home  which I did

Also I will have to setup  my programs and settings in Windows 7 --- Happy times

I would have saved a lot of time and anguish if I had simply reloaded Windows 7 then Linux-Lite without trying to mend anything . I had hoped Linux and its support community would have been able to help fix it . After having problems in my early days with Window I found s it was quicker to reinstall the whole OS rater than find and fix my problem

The only saving grace is I still have all my data in its own Partition

  Facebook pages for Linux Lite?
Posted by: Coastie - 10-21-2015, 06:03 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (2)

Jerry,

There are two Linux Lite Facebook pages for Linux Lite. The one which links from this form and homepage, Linux Lite http://www.facebook.com/linuxliteos and Linux Lite OS http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1070307445.

Linux Lite OS has this 2/28/13 post:"My name is Jerry Bezencon and I am the creator of Linux Lite. Welcome to our Facebook page." It also has Friend requests. The Linux Lite page does not. Not sure of difference but they must be two different type of Facebook pages.

Are both of these your Facebook pages?

  Main page - High CPU
Posted by: valtam - 10-21-2015, 09:51 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (15)

I've checked with our host, the main page of the Forums is causing high cpu on our web server. I need to get to the bottom of this issue and sort it out. Some of you may have experienced the '508 Resource Usage is high' message when loading the Forums.

The first suspect is the News block. This has been disabled for now and we'll see if that is one of the factors. Other features on the main page may be disabled in the course of troubleshooting and finding that exact culprit.

  Hello from central California

I have been using LL for about 6 months on a P-4 dual core PC, two older Dell Inspiron laptops and an Acer Aspire One netbook. I have found that LL installs nicely and runs rings around other OSes on these machines while being relatively easy for me to maintain. After installing 2.6 with it's wonderful new control center, I decided to register and offer my congratulations and sincere thanks to the development team for creating such a great Linux distribution. I have been using Linux for over a decade now and LL shines as the best distribution for my older hardware and it just gets better and better with each release.
'Glad the wildfires are over and that El Nino is delivering some much needed rain here.
Thanks again to Jerry, Misko, Johnathan, Brian, Bill and Adam who have created a great distribution and attracted a growing community and many thanks to all those who patiently answer our questions in these forums. Blessings to you all.

Greetings all,
Just thought I'd say Hi , I'm a new user of Linux-Lite - But have been using Linux for many years.  Thought I'd give it a try after reading the review on Distrowatch.  So far I'm very impressed.

  impossible booting after grub repair
Posted by: liltux - 10-20-2015, 09:03 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

Hello all,

I'm new to linuxlite, and I ran into a small problem, or I thought....
I had a little argument with my computer, and had to restore grub.
But by mistake, I checked an option ''purge kernel before reinstalling'' with ubuntu boot repair app,
and during the process, my laptop battery died, before the whole process could end.

So now, my system won't boot, I'm stuck on splash screen forever.
Ok, I could install it anew, but I have only one partition. my home folder I can access with a live
system on  CD or USB and I could backup my files.

But ... I spent many hours tweaking it to my linking and I was wondering if I could use
a live cd to boot, before chroot in and restore the thing?

Edit : more info on the problem
grub directory is almost empty, no image, no initrd, no vmlinuz.
So is there a way to chroot to this system, and rebuild everything in order to boot from it that any of you know of ?

Just registered on the forum and here to say hello all.
Have just installed Linux Lite after yesterdays review on Distrowatch and I'm impressed with it up to now. I particularly like the LL control centre and a big kudos to the developers for coming up with it.
I have used Linux on and off for nearly 20 years skipping between different distro's as the fancy took me. I was using Ultimate Edition 4.2 until I installed Linux Lite instead, before Ultimate Edition I was using Makulu. I also have some older PC's that run Puppy Linux and similar small distro's. I am also a big Commodore Amiga user and have several of those machines.
I thank you for your efforts on Linux Lite, I will get back to customizing my install now.  Smile

  Couple of Plex Setup tips
Posted by: Duckeenie - 10-20-2015, 03:55 AM - Forum: Tutorials - Replies (2)

Literally a couple of tips for issues that people might have with Plex that aren't covered very well by the manual.
(apologies if it's a little rudimentary.)

Plex Can't Find Your Media.

This is an issue that arises from Plex not having the correct permissions to access your files. It seems there are numerous ways to overcome this but as a newcomer I found the simplest solution involved typing the following into the terminal:

Code:
sudo nano /etc/default/plexmediaserver

Look for the line that says
Code:
PLEX_MEDIA_SERVER_USER=plex

and replace the value plex with your username. Save the file, exit Nano.

Next we restart the server to take advantage of the changes:
Code:
sudo service plexmediaserver restart

At this point Plex should have the required permissions to be able to access your media and setup your libraries.

Unable to Connect to Server From Local Device.

This is a firewall issues that we need to address.

Back to the terminal to open firewall ports then:
Code:
sudo ufw allow 32400/tcp

Following this we need to open Plex and navigate to Settings>Server>Remote Access and sign in. Immediately below this you have an option to manually specify a port: Enter 32400 and click the Retry button.

At this point as long as you have setup your libraries you should be good to connect to your media from any local device that runs Plex.
