  Wine Worpad
Posted by: Colin23erk - 08-12-2015, 07:48 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (19)

Using  Terminal I get

Quote:colin@colin-NC110:~$ wine wordpad
fixme:ntdll:NtLockFile I/O completion on lock not implemented yet
colin@colin-NC110:~$

Word Pad eventually opens OK but ---Will this cause any problems later eg Printing and Saving .

Is using the Terminal the only way to open Wine Wordpad - there is NotePad in the  > wine  > Programs > Accessories > Notepad but not Wordpad

Can I access my Windows XP desktop with both OS installed?
Posted by: rabar51 - 08-12-2015, 02:45 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (6)

I recently installed Linux Lite (dual boot).  I can access the Windows XP document folder but am wondering how to access the other original Windows desktop of the dual boot?  My printer won't work with Linux but am wondering if using the old XP (Windows) desktop I would be able to print as usual?

  Old User Accounts Deleted
Posted by: Neo - 08-11-2015, 10:08 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (1)

Hello,

Just over a year ago, I installed Linux Lite and started using the forum regularly.

I contributed to many threads, including this one.

Since then I have not been as active but I have sometimes came back to check on things (not logging in as much).

However, now my account and many of the other early accounts have been deleted and we have become guests, so we can no longer reply to anything with authenticity.

Personally, I don't think it is fair to keep our posts and delete our accounts without any obvious warning.

There was still reputation associated with the accounts and an opportunity to communicate, or at least acknowledge the original posters of the content as equals.

If there is an automatic expiration of accounts after a certain time period due to server limitations then the posts should not be kept either.

Honestly, I don't think it is reasonable to have to sign up again while old posts still exist that aren't linked to the accounts.

Furthermore, it discourages users from creating accounts again to help contribute as the process is tedious and any accreditation of the contribution can expire anyway.

  Beats Audio
Posted by: OldGuy - 08-11-2015, 07:28 PM - Forum: Off Topic - No Replies

If you have an HP laptop with Beats Audio - it takes some tweaking to make it work in Linux.  I finally sat down and Google'd the various fixes and found the simplest.  You need hda-jack-retask which is part of the alsa-tools-gui.  Once loaded, run the program and make the following edits:

codec: IDT 92HD91BXX

under options check "Show unconnected pins"

pin ID: 0x0d, override and choose "Internal speaker"
pin ID: 0x0f, override and choose "Internal speaker"
pin ID: 0x10, override and choose "Internal speaker LFE"

Then click the "Apply now" button and then the "Install boot override" button

That's it.  It works great on my DV6-7245us laptop, might work on yours as well...

Not Linux From Scratch, but bare bones, learning
Posted by: darrell derrick - 08-11-2015, 02:31 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (8)

I read some of the LFS stuff , I am not that Bright, Is there a way to learn BASIC Linux, by doing, with as few variables as possible? I think what I want is to start from the command line and do one task at a time till I learn what every thing is ,where it is, and what it does.I have a Hard drive in My CD bay, in an after market, adapter,  LL2 sees it now, I partitioned it in half , It will be and aux drive, main drive 0 is 500gb, two partitions. I wanted to start with a simple thing like DMSL and go find what I need and install it. Is this a good plan? Thanks for your help past and future,, daryl de kb5zxm Magnolia Texas.

  Samba problems - phantom share
Posted by: paul1149 - 08-10-2015, 05:22 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

I'm having a hard time getting Win7 to access LL's passworded Samba shares. I understand this is a very common problem, and it seems the only solution is a group policy hack available only in Pro level Windows editions. Too bad for such an important function.

I will keep on working on that, but there is another problem I'm having at the moment.

I have configured smb.conf with five of my own shares, and deleted the stock LinuxLiteShare. I also changed the netbios name of my machine to precision, from Lappy. Neither of the two older names exists in the smb.conf file any longer.

And yet upon booting it up today, a Win7 machine not only saw my new shares under Precision, it saw the LinuxLiteShare under Lappy. There must be another source that Samba is reading from? Any insight would be appreciated.

800x600 is the only setting for my desktop
Posted by: Hardcoretexan - 08-09-2015, 09:52 PM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (19)

New to Linux so please reply in baby steps(lol).
I have an inspirion 1525 which I installed linux lite on.
I downloaded some movies mp4, avi etc... and they used to play fine but for some reason(I don't play movies a lot on my laptop) they stopped playing instead the video would never start playing(just a frozen blurred screen). The audio played fine, so I downloaded several players to make sure it was not the program( I have handbrake, brasero, smplayer) none of them worked.
I found a site to reinstall drivers so i did the following.

1) First, you need to open up a terminal shell. You can either start up your computer and go to a virtual shell

Ctrl+Alt+F1

or login and open up the gnome terminal

Ctrl+Alt+t

2) Then In the terminal, run the following commands:

This command will refresh your packages

sudo apt-get update

Then you will need to install the linux headers if those are not already installed.

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic

Next, you will need to do a dist-upgrade, which upgrade some packages of your system

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

When that is all done, you will need to reboot your system

sudo reboot

The Installation of the Drivers

1) Repeat step one to open the terminal.

Now install the Nvidia drivers

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates

You have one more step, or else, you will have a high chance that you just soft-bricked your system. For safe measures, run this final command:

sudo nvidia-xconfig

*There was a well known bug that the Nvidia installation script did not run that command. If that config file is not created, your graphics will not work.

Now reboot your system:

sudo reboot

Congratulations! You should now be using Nvidia Drivers.

Now I can play videos but my desktop settings are only 600x800 and the video is too large for the players screen. any help would be appreciated.

Greg
