  Buy without a test drive!
Posted by: Coastie - 02-12-2015, 08:11 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (13)

As you may have already or seen on You Tube, Elementary OS wants you to donate to download their distro http://http://blog.elementaryos.org/post...0/payments.  :o

I have distro hopped looking for the distro for me. Some I downloaded and liked. Some I could not even install because of no automatic partitioning. I stopped using a rolling release after GUI updater broke. I am still using Linux Lite that I started using in January last year after trying the rolling release for about a month. I still watch and read reviews and download distros to see what they look like and to try find a backup in case my chosen distro, Linux Lite is ever discontinued.  :'(

I have donated to Linux Lite after using awhile and probably will again. Smile  I would not "donate" just to try a distro out whether I installed it or just tried it on the live DVD/CD.

I won't buy a car without a test drive either.  ;D

[SOLVED] Some questions with dual booting
Posted by: Alex - 02-11-2015, 10:42 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (3)

I recently bought a second hand HP laptop, which has Win 7 installed and running OK. I would like to retain Win 7 as I need it for a few non-Linux programs, on the other hand I love using LL for most tasks. So, I am considering having a dual boot machine, hence some questions:

1. Is it recommended that the dual boot be done using easy BCD? As shown in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dwwSSg-kJM

2. Is it a good idea to retain all banking/payments/ transfers in LL - because it is more secure?

3. How much HD space should I allow for the LL portion?

4. If a virus/malaware happens to infect the Win 7 partition is it likely to contaminate the LL partition?

5. Are there any other problems that a newbie like me should watch out for?

Thanks for your help

alex

If I edit these vids in Openbox the size will increase 10 fold so

Does any one know of a good .mkv or .mp4 splitter joiner that doesn't increase the size much if at all.?

Posting pics on the forum is simple but please do not post large images as they seriously inconvenience other users by slowing the page load times.
Please would a mod be kind enough to modify this sentence to conform with Lite guide lines.

First thing to do is register on imgur at http://imgur.com

You then waste some of your life watching videos [Image: Zfp03zG.gif]

Size 27 MB and 9 minutes long

Size 24 MB length 9 minutes

Is the back ground hum preferable to the music? [Image: 6KHphBjs.jpg]

If you use ".gif" pics watch out for an added ".gifv" at the end of the url address which you must remove so it's ".gif".

Allocating entire hard drive to Linux Lite
Posted by: pauloz - 02-10-2015, 04:26 AM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (17)

Hi everybody

I've recently installed Lite on my ASUS EeePC 1005HA netbook and I'm thrilled with the way it's performing. I have an issue with unallocated space of about 93GB and I want to allocate the entire hard drive to Linux Lite. FYI, I've attached a screenshot of my partitions. I've searched high and low for the answer but it evades me. I only have basic understanding of partitions etc and would appreciated step by step instructions .

Thanks
Paul

  AS400/S38/S36 guy venturing into Linux
Posted by: pallington - 02-09-2015, 01:26 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (5)

A few decades ago, I did work on a Unix box, the PR1ME.  But that was long ago, and far away.

I did love that box, it was my first exposure to a real multi-user/multi-tasking operating systems, my first exposure to the real world.  And I was good.

But the first real job offer came in from an S/36 shop, because I knew COBOL.  For those unfamiliar with IBM mid-ranges, RPG is the language of choice, for no good reason I can think of.  This made me an expert in COBOL on IBM midrange machines (the only expert for about a decade), and I have been IBM midrange ever since.

I have more or less kept up my DOS and Windows skills, but I cannot be a Windows programmer.  Being a programmer is hard enough without having to worry about if a program fault:

  • is a bug in your program
  • a misplaced DLL
  • a contradictory program running somewhere
  • a need for a reboot

Due to customer demand, my company is moving towards Windows , and every instinct I had, said. "RUN!", so I did.

I do understand the concepts of OOP, but in the Windows environment, it seems a programmers nightmare.

That is my story

Pete
