Hello all,
I was just wondering if some wise person could give a list of the essential customizations to save before doing a clean install of a new version of Linux Lite.
I've tried Aptik to prepare somewhat. I know some advise backing up the root and home directories, but that seems like overkill - surely there is a small subset of that that is relevant to changes one might want to keep and reinstall?
Thanks!

As Valtam said I had to register again on this new forum after I found it by shortening my old bookmark url.
8) I have been using Linux Lite for about a month and using the two previous forums. I have been getting a lot of help especially from Valtam which I very much appreciate.
I started as a reluctant computer many years ago when my boss said he wanted me to keep doing the job I was assigned but my secretary would no longer type my reports. I would have to type them myself on a computer. So I learned on a DOS computer using an interface I think was called a menu. Got very good at it and help design input programs for the state. (The computer gurus made them work.) I got my own home computer with a "menu" interface over DOS, moved to Windows when it came available. Became the go-to-guy for years on computers at work as long as it did not involve DOS. Went as far as Windows XP Pro at work and XP at home. Finally after getting sick enough of virus, crashes, etc., I tried Linux for a little while then got scared off by Terminal and Synaptic Package Manager. I went to an iMac for home just before Apple stopped using PPC.
Of course now I keep getting notified by Firefox, Facebook, etc. that I need to update my software or I won't be able to use sites in the future but can't because I have a PPC. Had this computer rebuilt as below in 10/08 for my son to run Ubuntu 8.04 but he lost interest in it. Bought a new 24" monitor for this computer so now I am using it. I am not going to buy another Mac now that I am getting comfortable with Linux.
When I started up this computer it update Ubuntu 8.04 to 13.something with the Unity desktop. I hate the Unity desktop but played around with it a little then crashed it and tried Lubuntu for a while. Discovered Linux Lite and bought a DVD burner so I could install it. Linux Lite will be the OS that I am keeping. I tried a couple of dock program but not have figured out how to make the desk top without an extra program look like my Mac. Still learning on it and had to do a reinstall because I messed it up. I still avoid the Terminal because it is too much like DOS for me.

| Linux Lite Development - Our goals and how to get involved. |

This is paraphrased from Development/Code page, More info on how to get involved can be found be joining us on the #linuxlite channel on Freenode IRC, or contacting here.
This is a very exciting time in Linux Lite development. We are in the process of producing custom, free software for Linux Lite. Our philosophy is minimal code, minimal design and minimal dependency. Our applications should be clean, fast and simple. Intelligent, well thought out design with great attention to detail. We use the GPL v2.
Ethos
Our target audience are Windows users. We want to show people that a linux based operating system can:
- Be simple to use.
- Look good.
Following qualities and abilities we are looking for:- People who are open minded.
- You desire to share knowledge with others.
- You think in terms of how software will benefit others.
- You don't let your own personal tastes influence your design and feature work.
- Have the ability to visualise in your head the end product and how users will interact with our software.
- Passionate about winning over Windows users to linux.
Can work as part of a team.- Can code in either: python, bash, zenity. Other languages are welcome (just no java)
- You should already have some code and or software that we can look at.
Please don't volunteer if you:- Are egotistical.
- Have an elitist attitude or mindset.
- Consider only how to benefit yourself.
- Believe that your way is the only way.
- Can't take constructive criticism.
The majority of the tools we aim to create simply aim to improve a new users experience, be it something as simple as a configuration setting that can vastly improve things. Or a graphical tool to install software. Nothing is silly and would be ignored. We are a friendly group of people with the single goal of offering a "Lite" Linux distro, and ease of use. Please feel free to contact Valtam (Our Humble Creator and Project Leader), or any moderators here with ideas or questions. And it will be forwarded accordingly.
Please note this post is not intended as a suggestion or feature request thread, feature and bug requests can be found here respectively.

I would like to replace the existing Linux Lite with a new installation on my Dell Inspiron 1501. I need to replace the existing Broadcom driver because of intermittent WiFi connection and have been experiencing problems With the Synaptic Package Manager. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A word about the offering of the 3.8 kernel.
As this is the last build in the 1.0 LTS series, we wanted to offer people more hardware support. The 3.2 kernel is fairly old now, and Linux Lite 2.0 is bound to be sporting a very up to date kernel come release time circa May/June 2014. At the moment the only downside we have in offering the 3.8 kernel in this release is that if you install the proprietary video drivers you may lose the grey penguin start up and shutdown screen. There isn't much we can do about this at the moment, the up side is that start up and shutdown will be that much quicker as a result. If the grey penguin start up and shutdown screen is important to you, stick with the open source video drivers. You can also always just stay with 1.0.6 if it is meeting your current needs.
Live USB/DVD/VirtualBox/Vmware: Login is automatic, no credentials required.
The image can be written to a 2gb or larger USB stick, or a writable CD or DVD.
Alternatively, you can use the dd command: sudo dd if=linux-lite-1.0.8-32bit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick.
In linux to find out the letter of your usb stick, open a terminal and type: df -h It is usually listed as 'media' or similar.
Please see the built in Help & Support manual if you require a more detailed explanation of this procedure.
There is no upgrade process from one Linux Lite version to the next because of all the in-between modifications. If 1.0.6 is working well for you stick to that, otherwise you will have to clean install 1.0.8. There is also no way to upgrade from the 1.0.8 betas. In future builds of Linux Lite we will provide a simple upgrade path during LTS releases.
Recommended Hardware/Minimal System requirements:
700 MHz processor+
512 MiB RAM+
5 GB of hard-drive space+
VGA capable of 1024x768 screen resolution
Either a CD drive or a USB port for the iso
Login to the live desktop is automatic.
The first thing you MUST do after a fresh install of Linux Lite is run Menu, Install Updates.

Release Announcement
Hot on the heels of our 1.0.6 32bit pae release, due to popular demand we are releasing our first ever 64bit version of Linux Lite. Enjoy all the features of our 32bit pae version, now in 64bit. In an effort to keep the final iso size to a minimum we have provided a one click Steam installer due to the ia32-libs and additional dependencies that Steam requires on a 64bit operating system. Thank you to everyone who contributed ideas, code and their support. There is no update process from the beta version.

Using this architecture also means 64bit will idle with more ram than the 32bit version (around 220mb for 64bit vs 140mb for the 32bit version from a cold boot). This is why for so long I have been such a staunch advocate of 32bit pae operating systems, but I am nonetheless happy to provide a 64bit version for those who require one. The end user benefits from the overall performance of a 64bit operating system.
In 1.0.8 the pae kernel will be dropped, but will still be available via an install script for those that want it. This is good news for those with older hardware and allows us to cover the maximun possible spectrum of personal computers within the 3.2 kernel.

Features/Fixes:
Exact same features as our 32bit pae version.
Kernel 3.2.0.48
Updated Help Manual.
2 new install scripts, Install ia32-libs and Install Steam.
Steam installer now in Install Additional Software (to save on iso size)
Custom installation slides should now work in all languages.
Fixed Firefox opening files dialogue.
All custom scripts now also work via the Desktop right click (thanks to rattatoue and SoulSpire)
