Hi belltoes,
When you open the lid again/ waking it up from sleep are you able to switch to a console successfully?
You would do this by pressing:
Ctrl + Alt + F1
Am not sure, but according to your description it sounds like that the computer is still running - except the screen.
(Ctrl + Alt + F7 would take you back to the Xsession)
