Problems with LL2.8 to LL3.2 update - HELP

I have just updated LL2.8 to LL3.2, retaining the original /home directory but have encountered the following initial problems with this update.

• Menu, Install Updates - Opens a blank LXTerminal, no user name showing and unable to type ANYTHING in terminal
  
• Menu, System, Create System Report - Identical to No1 above
  
• Wallpapers cannot be set in ANY directory as ALL images greyed out in Background Settings Manager but freely available in image viewer
  

Any help in resolving these issues would be greatly appreciated

Hi Daveyboy,

To get some help on this issue could you please share a bit more about how you "updated" from LL2.8 to LL.3.2?
Please be aware that there is no update path available between the series, i.e. that there is a new installation required! Of course you can keep your data in one way or another, depending how your original system was set up.

Update was via DVD ISO using something else option - the way I have always updates between series

Is you home folder on a separate partition?
Did you choose "Format" when assigning the system partition for installation?

As mentioned before, there is no (official) upgrade path between series. If it worked for you so far then lucky you

My machine is Dual Boot Windows XP & Linux Lite and the Hard drive is split into 5 partitions (inc. swap) with my LL Home on it's own Partition and  Yes  I did reformat the new LL 3.2 partition for installation.


As I said before I used exactly the same method as I have used to update 2.0 to 2.2 to 2.4 to 2.6

Ah, there might be the reason for the confusion/misunderstanding.
There IS actually a very easy method for updating in between a series, i.e. from 2.0 up to 2.8. Obviously you haven't used it and did a new installation which would not have necessary.

In regard to your current issue on hand I'd suggest to rename your current home folder and create a new one, copying over the content from /etc/skel and making sure the permissions are correct. Then log in again so that the new virgin home folder gets used and see whether the issue still persists.
You also could test this by just creating another user of course.
