Latest kernel update worked for me (Spectre/Meltdown)
Posted by: Ottawagrant - 02-08-2018, 08:17 PM - Forum: On Topic - No Replies

Just a short time ago the LL kernel updated to 4.4.0-113 #136. After the installation & reboot I ran Jerry's spectre-meltdown-checker.sh in terminal. For my computer (An HP Compaq 7900 with an Intel Core 2 vPro CPU) all 3 variants came back as 'not vulnerable'. A tip of the hat to Linux. If anyone else feels like it please post what this kernel update did for you, if anything. Thanks to all.

  Question About Splash/Start Screen
Posted by: mdiemer - 02-08-2018, 06:06 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (9)

Is there a way to change or modify the bright yellow screen? I don't know if that's the Start or Splash screen, but the light is too much for my photosensitive eyes. It's ok in the daytime, but at night I become like a cat, and need things darker.  I have looked around in Settings, but couldn't see a way to do this. This is actually my only complaint with Linux Lite. If there's no way to change it, I'll just shade my eyes, like I've been doing. I've installed f.lux, but that only kicks in after the system is started.

Thanks, Mike

  Making Selections In "Settings"
Posted by: mdiemer - 02-08-2018, 06:02 PM - Forum: Other - No Replies

My first dumb question: When making selections in Settings, I am confused about how to do this. It's those little squares you have to click on/in. Which is on and which is off? When it looks slightly raised, or when it looks depressed? I want to be sure, so I don't go messing things up too much. And BTW, is there a way to return everything to Default Settings?

Thanks,

Mike

  Wine Blue Remix icon theme
Posted by: Moltke - 02-08-2018, 02:57 PM - Forum: Desktop Customization - Replies (4)

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a nice llife! Smile

I''ve been playing around with a LL 3.8 VM I created. One thing I've been doing is to try different gtk themes as well as icon themes. I found this theme https://www.opendesktop.org/p/1012523/ and kind of like it, really nice-cool looking theme. However, there are a few things I don't like; some buttons are too big as shown in the image bellow

That's a screen capture I took from LL VM running in QEMU, as you notice action buttons are way too big, I tried editing the index file but that just made things worst  :Smile.

Other than that - which it's not something you can just ignore as well as annoying I admit - icons are well designed and look really good. Take a look

And in case you wonder the icon set doesn't seem to slow down XFCE user interface interaction or LL at all.  If any of you guys have any idea how to change/fix that if even possible to do such thing, please let me know. Smile

Main menu option Windows Wireless Drivers
Posted by: drrdf - 02-07-2018, 11:02 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (1)

I am running Linux Lite 3.4 on one 64 bit dual core PC; on this PC there is the option in the main menu to install windows wireless drivers. When I have attempted to install Linux Lite 3.4  on another 32 bit PC this option does not appear on the main menu, nor does it do so with version 3.6. Also there are differences when running up the system; for example the label Linux Lite 3.4 is displayed whilst running up on the first PC but not on the other. Does anyone know why this is please? I have only wireless cards which do not have Linux drivers, so I need this option on the menu to set up  the wireless card to connect to Internet.

Changing menu entries from category and/or creating new ones
Posted by: Moltke - 02-07-2018, 10:31 PM - Forum: Tutorials - No Replies

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a nice life! Smile

In this tutorial we'll see how to change a menu entry from one category into another one and/or creating new ones by using the menu maker/customizer app "main menu" available in LL. In this example I'll change "printers" from system menu entry into the graphics one.

First thing you need to do is click on menu or press home key, type "menu" click enter and "main menu" will start.

Next, select the category where the app/tool you want to change/delete is, in this case system > printers, click on it and select properties.

A window properties is open, copy that info as you'll need it for next step which is clicking in the desired menu destination, in this case "Graphics". Once in graphics menu, in the "main menu" app window select "new item", a new window opens for you to type in the new item details, use the ones you wrote/copied before and click on "ok" to close that window. The new item should now be created and will appear in the graphics menu.

If you want/wish no longer to keep "printers" menu on system entries select that item in "main menu" app window and next click on delete

And that's it, easy right? Smile Now you can close "main menu" app window, click on menu or press home key, point your mouse to graphics menu  and see your new created/reallocated item

If creating a non existant/available menu entry, steps are almost the same; select new item option from within "main menu" app, type in item properties in the window/box, click "ok" and that should be it.

PS: I made all of this in a LL 3.8 64bit VM. Oh boy VMs are really helpful  8)
