Linux Lite website has received some love
Posted by: valtam - 11-02-2017, 01:50 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (21)

This week I've been looking to make certain parts of the website easier to use, and to provide a better experience.

Mirrors Page:

ISO download mirrors are now in table format that includes the 'City'.

It's now much easier for new Mirror hosters to submit their Mirror information with the following form:

Hardware Database:

The Hardware Database now has an expand button so that the entire list doesn't load without showing.

Donors List Page

Is now Mobile friendly:

3 years in on Linux full time, best I can say is thanks to the team.  Never fails.  I still distro hop a bit, but, again, lite never fails me.  Thanks.

  Blank Install Updates Window
Posted by: DenW - 11-02-2017, 12:24 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (20)

It appears that the update procedures used by LL have some problems right now based on other posts (but I have not experienced any of those so far!).  I am reporting that on at least three recent occasions when updates were detected the gui-window which allows you to see the updates before install did not populate but remained blank.  If I then pushed the install button on the blank window the update progress window opened and correctly installed the updates, which I could check in the log file window then available.  Tonight it happened to me again so this time I cancelled the install and then initiated the install software procedure from the menu again.  This time the updates appeared as they should and installed correctly.

This possible minor "bug" does not trouble me personally as I do get available updates.  However I am intending to install LL on a friends old laptop for his use and I do not like to raise doubts in his mind about the reliability of Linux (he is a Windows convert).
Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so is there a solution?

Keyboard Problem Gateway MX6421 laptop (old)
Posted by: garyn1 - 11-01-2017, 07:51 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (4)

Linux Lite works great on my old Gateway laptop, except for the keyboard. Its a US QWERTY keyboard with a function key that lets you type alternate characters on some keys. There is a row of numbered keys near the top, the "zero" key types "/" when used in conjunction with the function key in windows. The "M" key types "zero" when used in conjunction with the function key in windows. But in Linux Lite those key work backwards, you have to press an hold the function key to type "M" on the M or 0 key and you have to hold the function key and press the 0 or / key to type 0. Is there a way to fix this problem with out adding a usb keyboard?

If your scanner is not detected
Posted by: Paul74 - 11-01-2017, 08:22 AM - Forum: Tutorials - Replies (3)

Hello,

If during installation of a scanner unit (or all-in-one unit), your scanner is not recognized, you may try this solution :

1 - download Vuescan software from :  https://www.hamrick.com/
2 - install the .deb file you just downloaded
3 - run it, and after 2 minutes it will find your scanner unit
4 - you will be able to use any other other scanner software (simplescan, Xsane, ....)
5 - you don't need anymore to run Vuescan

Hope it may help !
Have a nice day.

LL boots up sluggish, becomes 'snappy' on logoff/logon
Posted by: Cedarviola - 10-31-2017, 10:19 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (13)

What I see is sluggish UI behavior, for example dragging a window across the desktop, or hovering over a list. When dragging, the window lags way behind the cursor; when hovering it takes a perceptible amount of time for the item to highlight. Also benchmarks -- e.g. Blowfish gives a score around 38. This is after a fresh power-up boot.

It seems like someone, some process is holding interrupts disabled for too long a time.

But the good news is, that if I log off and back on, LL is delightfully quick and responsive with a Blowfish score around 16! This is very consistent, and I just discovered the log on/off sortof by accident.

I've been using htop and cpufreq-info looking for clues but no joy so far. Curiously when sluggish, Task Manager shows about 50% CPU usage (nothing else running) with Task Manager itself consuming most of that. When snappy, Task Manager shows only 4..5% CPU and again, Task Manager is responsible for most of that -- which seems most reasonable.

I submit this, wondering if anyone has similar experience, additional clues or a possible solution.

Thanks for listening.
Jim
