Languages allowed for use in the forum
Posted by: Moltke - 10-23-2017, 08:01 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (14)

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a nice life! Smile  Hope this is the right place for this post. I recently noted that there's no a Spanish Linux Lite forum version/site, and  I was wondering, what if someone who only speaks Spanish installs LL and needs some support/help with something? Can he/she come to the forum and post his/her questions in Spanish? Or is it English the one and only language to be used for that purpose? I also think this might be a deal-breaker for some Spanish-speaking people as they might find that as an abridgment which keep them from installing such a wonderful OS as LL. I know there's an Ubuntu Spanish forum and people may get some help over there, but it may comes the time when someone gets into some specific LL related issue and you guys could just have the right answer/advice for that person. Not even the help manual is available in Spanish and/or any other language it seems. So, are/is there any rule(s) regarding what language(s) should be used in the forum? I don't see any on the forum posting guidelines I'll be more than happy to help translating LL help manual into Spanish for a start by the way.

Well, thanks in advance for your answers/opinions. Smile

possible to dual boot Linux Lite and Windows 10?
Posted by: micahel - 10-23-2017, 04:41 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (2)

On my other computer, that had Vista as the primary OS, I installed Linux Lite and got the GRUB boot loader for dual booting, but my new computer has Windows 10 and I'm having difficulty installing the Linux Lite. I've had to turn off secure boot, turn on legacy boot, and now I'm getting a pop up box when I try to install Linux Lite that reads as follows: 'The partition format used on your disk normally requires you to create a separate partition for boot loader code...'

I'm under the impression based on what I've read that I have done something wrong and need to install Linux Lite the same way Windows 10 was installed using the UEFI , but I couldn't get the USB stick with Linux Lite installed to load with the default settings.

My first question is how can I resolve the message up above regarding the boot loader code, and my second question is will I get GRUB bootloader on startup if I install Linux Lite with legacy boot mode, or do I have to jump through hoops to choose between the different OS I have installed ?

Thanks for any assistance.

  Change default applications
Posted by: RjveraL - 10-23-2017, 03:15 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (5)

I'm trying to change the default application (LibreOffice) from file type .xlsx to WPS.

However, do not let me change this option.

What will be the problem?

What I usually do to change it is:
Right button - Properties - Default application - this option does not let change
Right button - Open with ... Make this application default. - after closing it is verified that this new association does not exist.

I've tried several things

Attentive to your ideas and comments.

Rj

PS: Sorry my english is very bad

installing Linux from USB stick - which "USB creator" to use?
Posted by: br1anstorm - 10-22-2017, 10:09 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (12)

Over the last few years I have installed various Linux distros in the "traditional" way by downloading the ISO, burning a CD/DVD which then runs as a Live session, and installing from that CD/DVD.  I now have quite a collection of CDs and DVDs with versions of Lite, Mint, LXLE, Zorin and PCLinuxOS - many of which are no longer supported.

I now want to install/replace one or two distros, in laptops which I don't use daily and which therefore have no crucial config settings or files which I need to preserve.  So in effect they are 'clean installs'.

Rather than burn yet more CD/DVDs with recent Linux ISOs, I'd prefer to create a bootable USB stick from which I can then install.  I'd like advice on which is the best/easiest/most reliable of the various different software programs that can create the bootable stick.  I should add that I'll be installing from the USB stick on to older non-UEFI, non-GPT systems and/or on to external hard drives.

I am familiar with YUMI - and indeed have run Live sessions of various distros from a YUMI USB.  But I have never installed from YUMI - mainly because their website has an explicit warning that installing from a YUMI USB may sometimes work, but is not supported.  Hardly a ringing reassurance!

So is is better or safer to create a bootable USB stick - and then install - using some other means.  Unetbootin?  Rufus? LiveUSBInstall?  Universal USB Installer (UUI)?  Etcher?  Others?  I notice incidentally that the LL install help manual suggests doing it from within LL by running commands in the terminal (I'm not too keen on that idea as I still find command line working pretty unfamiliar territory).

I would be creating the bootable USB stick using either Windows 7 or Linux Lite or Mint.

My main priority, apart from reliability, is simplicity and user-friendliness:  a decent user interface, and not too many complicated tweaking choices.  Any recommendations would be appreciated.

  Linux Lite 3.8 Home Page
Posted by: valtam - 10-22-2017, 06:51 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (42)

In Linux Lite 3.8, we will have our own Google Search home page.

The idea behind this is to try and pull in a little more ad revenue to help fund the project, whilst still giving a familiar search engine experience.

The link will be set as here - https://mityer.khdlhfjijfrupr.tk/search/

Please help to test this out, and if you have any suggestions, I'll certainly consider them.

GPU Fan going 100% all the time?
Posted by: Zapmaster - 10-20-2017, 05:06 PM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (4)

So I have LL installed on a system with a Radeon 4870, it's a big old card with a loud blower fan, and it appears to constantly be running at 100% (or close to it). So it's very loud. Is there a way to limit the fan speed on it manually? Or are there drivers I should be installing so that fan ramps up with load? And I don't think it's the card overheating because when I log in to Windows Vista on the same system it's fan is quiet. Any tips would be great, thanks.

  Issue with FileZilla
Posted by: Francois - 10-20-2017, 02:17 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

Greetings!

I am having an issue with FileZilla (for a few weeks, now). More precisely, simply double-clicking a remote folder crashes FileZilla with the following output:

Code:
filezilla: symbol lookup error: filezilla: undefined symbol: _ZN2fz18replace_substringsERKNSt7__cxx1112basic_stringIwSt11char_traitsIwESaIwEEES7_S7_

I felt like this was more of a FileZilla issue so I searched their forums and found this:
Quote:Your installed version of FileZilla is incompatible with your installed version of libfilezilla. Please update to the most recent versions of both FileZilla and libfilezilla.

However, both my versions are the latest available ones in the repository:

Code:
francois@SilentPC:~$ apt-get -s install filezilla

Conf libfilezilla-dev (0.9.1-1~getdeb1 GetDeb:16.04/xenial-getdeb [amd64])
francois@SilentPC:~$

I have tried rebooting, reinstalling, etc... to no avail. Am I doing something wrong, or is there something I could do to troubleshoot the issue?

Thank you and have a nice day, fellow Lite'rs!

P.S. Also, totally unrelated but since this is probably very simple to fix, I'm rather ashamed to make a topic for this. My Whisker menu had the search bar and logout buttons at the bottom, and now they're above the actual menu. How can I revert them back?
