  DAW/digital audio workstation recomedation please.
Posted by: pingball57 - 09-29-2017, 09:13 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (3)

Hi, I'm preparing to finally ditch Windows 10 from my one remaining Win m/c. I've backed up & swapped all the files i want to keep, transfered my bookmarks to my LL m/c & even made an installation disc for Win 10 should i ever have the urge to go back. I've got all the programs i have on Win or their equivalent on my LL m/c , except a DAW/digital audio workstation. I don't use it much as i am just starting to learn about them. I've looked at several and found that 'Temper' suited me best of those I tried as i could 'compose'/compile' without the need to attach a MIDI keyboard - but it's a Windows only program. Does anyone know of anything similar? I tried a search here but no joy & there doesn't look like anything in synaptics or lite source repository. Thanks.

  Software

Hi,
As a long standing user of windoze, which I have long wanted to ditch in favour of Linux, unfortunately,  I have ALWAYS encountered the same problem with ALL distros I've tried over 10 years or more: using software not included in the 'package', which although correctly installed is not available & doesn't appear when searching for it; as an example I installed 'zoneminder' today using the package manager, it's listed as installed yet does not appear under any of the categories in the menu, nor when I search for it, so how can I possibly use it! Needless to say this would NOT be a problem with windoze, as unlike every distro tried to date, I would have the choice to CHOOSE where a program is installed & where the shortcut for it appears to launch it; it beggars belief that after all these years, NOBODY creating a Linux distro (or a software for Linux) seems to have grasped the very simple concept that people install software to use them, not to have them sitting somewhere in the OS unusable for lack of knowing how to launch them...

UBUNTU to LINUX LITE Transformation Package

There is a way to transform my Ubuntu 16.04 to what is, visually, Linux Lite.

How can I do this, is there a step by step approach?

Some Script, some DEB

Thank You.

Which new HP all-in-one printers will load and scan negatives & slides ?
Posted by: m654321 - 09-29-2017, 11:21 AM - Forum: Off Topic - No Replies

I'm thinking of buying a new printer/scanner (an all-in-one), and of course am thinking about Hewlett Packard as they generally make hardware that's Linux-compatible.
However, I would like the new set-up to be able to scan and print my father-in-law's archive of 35 mm negatives and slides.

Any ideas for a good currently available HP model, that would do the trick ?

Looking forward to any feedback from you
Mike

Which CompTIA course for a job in repairing PCs ?
Posted by: m654321 - 09-29-2017, 11:02 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (5)

I'm now in retirement and am thinking of attempting to earn some money as a self-employed PC repair technician, the pension is not quite enough to pay all the bills  :-[

I have been encouraged by various family members who come to me, whenever they need a PC fix, repair, update or install on their laptop/desktop.
However, if I'm to 'go public', I feel I need some kind of official certification just to show some minimum level of professionalism in this area.

So, I'm looking for a course (online or offline) that might do this, as well as giving me a broader overview of PC problems in general.
I have heard of the CompTIA courses, which I think are international, though I live in Hastings (UK).

Which CompTIA (or BTEC) course would be best for PC repair & setup, with Windows or Windows and Linux OSes in mind - can anyone in the LL forum advise me ?

Many thanks in advance for any feedback ...

It says "No compatible source was found for this media" I already tried reinstalling flashplugin-installer. It didn't help in any way. Also, my current browser is Opera.

  Word Association Game
Posted by: bitsnpcs - 09-29-2017, 12:56 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (4)

Hello,

this thread is for another try to get a word association game started in English (all versions). It's for regular replies, reversals, slang, word plays< example =
cat
sprouts < cat is slang, means horrible, I think sprouts taste cat, so it fits. I don't think cats are cat though.

Are you really a playr Smile ?

**********

bunny        < also is slang for verbal chat up attempts, eg; did he give you the bunny.

Load USB ISO from existing Image to another computer
Posted by: ssxt - 09-29-2017, 12:32 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (2)

1. Created image like I wanted.
2. Used SystemBackup - per LL instructions - created an ISO on 16GB USB / Pendrive.
3. Boot off USB on another computer - same exact model of thin client - choose the Install option.
4. After entering user, pwd, host, etc. into goes to Partition Settings.
5. The Pen drive is 14.92 Gib; the computer's  drive is 14.91 Gib.
      >>>IS THIS THE ISSUE???too 'big' of ISO?
6. I do NOT understand Linux partitions (familiar w/Windows).
7. When I create a new partition and 'reset partition settings', it never gives me the 'NEXT' option.

Or How do I get to the 'Install Linux Lite' option AFTER I boot from the USB Pendrive - That Install option is EASY.

Thanks
Td

  Lite Sources Simple Question
Posted by: Mart - 09-28-2017, 10:14 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (4)

In Release Announcement 3.6 it says -

“NOTE: Lite Sources does not include Ubuntu repositories or software. This is only for Linux Lite created applications eg. Lite Software, Lite Welcome, Lite Tweaks etc.”

So, can someone please answer this simple question for me (forgive my noobness!) :-

If I don’t use Lite Sources, will I still get updates for Lite Software, Lite Welcome, Lite Tweaks etc through the normal Ubuntu repositories/mirrors?

Thanks.

  subtitles files linux confusing behaviour.
Posted by: Moltke - 09-28-2017, 01:18 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (5)

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a nice life! I'm facing some kind of a situation with subtitle files. When I download a subtitle I usually download it in 2 languages if possible; Spanish and English. Now, whenever I try to do this the system seems to read the 2 files as the same asking me to replace one with the other, I mean, even they're not the same file (i.e subtitle.eng .srt, subtitle.spa .srt) seems like Linux doesn't know the difference between one subtitle being on a different language than the other but only reading the *.srt extension and sees them as the same one, so I have to save both files in different separate folders, otherwise I'm asked to replace the subtitle each time. I'm confused cause I've never ever faced this in Windows. I use subdownloader and vlc vlsubs addon for this as well as google. I googled for this but didn't find anything. It's not like it is a very big problem to me  but I was curious whether any of you guys have ever faced a similar situation and how you solved it if you happened to solve it. Thanks in advance for your answers. Smile
