Posted by: thra - 07-04-2017, 08:39 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (19)

Just finished writing a list of the best lightweight Linux distros and we included Linux Lite in the list (of course)

Any feedback? Other recommendations? Please let us know if there's anything we need to update.

Converting from Mint to Lite on a HP2000 laptop.
Posted by: dfshunk - 07-03-2017, 09:20 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (2)

Hi all,

I have a five-year old HP2000 laptop that I converted to Linux Mint. After the success I've had with Lite on a 2006 MacBook, I want to convert the HP2000 to Lite as well. However, I've tried multiple times to load from a DVD and USB and I just cannot get anything to work. I've made the USBs on several tools and nothing is working. I've gone into the BIOS to get the computer to boot a DVD and from a USB and the machine still boots from the hard drive. I know I'm missing something simple but cannot figure out what it is. Any suggestions???

Thanks,
Don

  Hello all

Hi everyone,

My name is Don and I'm an old dog learning new tricks. I've converted two old MacBooks and an HP to Linux finding that all three computers work better with Linux than with the original OS's. I've installed Lite on the oldest MacBook and, so far, it runs much better than it did on Mac OS X..

Here we go,
Don

  GUI video with sound
Posted by: CaperAsh - 07-03-2017, 07:31 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (7)

I want to make some you-tube style videos - guy talking into the computer, i.e. with capture from webcam and sound. I have googled and tried a few things like cheese and the guvcview in the LL software, but nothing works. Is there a simple program out there that can help me do this? I am not sure what such things are called and suspect haven't been getting good search results.

Or: can I get help in getting guvcview to run without error message on starting up. ' could not start a video stream on the device'. Cheese works fine, but has no audio.
I cannot use Skype because somebody hijacked my email and Skype won't let me cancel that account and am not interested in making a new email address just for skype.

About time that I said Hi
Posted by: ballentinems2 - 07-02-2017, 11:06 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (4)

Hi Community, i have debating whether or not to introduce myself for a couple of weeks and after a couple of libations i thought - sod it, its about time that I said Hi.

I've been using Linux on and off since about 1996.  Never to any great degree of competence, but at least I knew it was available and I had the option  Big Grin .

I'm using linux lite on a woefully underpowered HP550 laptop.  It's enough for my needs though.

I recently graduated with a very obscure Masters degree in Lift (Elevator) engineering.  I mention this because its actually cheaper for us to develop the control side of things using raspberry Pi these days than any other platform!

Dabble a little with Arduino too, despite having problems getting the latest version to run, lol.  Well, we all need hobbies.  Big Grin

My background is more in control systems and mechanical engineering, but i like to dip my toe in the electrickery side of things and I am considering entering the world of HAM radio with my local group.

Have to say, that although it lacks the bells and whistles of full blown Ubuntu, i am blown away by the stability and speed of linux lite.  If i ever did install on one of my faster platforms, i think that i'd still opt for this distro.

  Configuring MPD as user service
Posted by: Dusty - 07-02-2017, 03:10 PM - Forum: Tutorials - No Replies

Hi all,

I've been using LL as media jukebox for almost 3 years mostly as music player. MPD default system service installed, USB SB X-Fi as audio source and Android as a controller. "The problem" rises when I've bought a new loudspeakers. They are probably designed without consideration of Baffle Step compensation which without produce low frequency leak and frequency balans unsettled. The easiest way compensate it is using ordinary equalizer. Unfortunately after hours of fight with alsaequal I couldn't convice it to cooperate and I've gave up. Decide use pulseaudio.

As you know (od not) it isn't so simple just set it in MPD's configuration file. Default MPD and pulseaudio have different owners so MPD couldn't reach (in a simple way) user's pulsaudio proces. We need to reconfigure MPD and use it as user service. There are many descriptions how to do it, ie:

http://gmpc.wikia.com/wiki/MPD_INSTALL_U...ICE_UBUNTU but it doesn't give us success. After all steps of procedure I always have message:

Quote:socket: Failed to bind to ':6600': Address already in use

The solving took me a few hours more of "fun". It turns out there's a bug in Linux/MPD installer already raported:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepor...bug=769951

To free port we have to: $ sudo systemctl disable mpd.socket

And, at last, MPD starts play through pulseaudio. Now we can use graphical equalizer (but not only).

PS. English is not my native language. Hope my post is understandable.

  Supporting Linux Lite $$$
Posted by: smhardesty - 07-01-2017, 10:21 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (2)

I just now completed the steps to contribute a small amount each month to Linux Lite. Don't misunderstand. My contribution is a small amount, not a nice, big fat payday type contribution. I'm not posting to brag of my deed. I'm posting to say that if we really want to support Jerry and the rest of the crew, we need to consider helping out financially as we're each able to. There are expenses involved with maintaining a Linux Distribution, a web site, a forum site, etc, etc. If we truly love and appreciate Lite, we all need to do what we're able. You can even contribute as little as a dollar a month if that's what your personal budget allows. All the small, monthly donations add up to really help these guys out. Here is a link to where you can set up a monthly Paypal contribution. There are other methods of payment accepted as well. For Paypal, scroll down nearly to the bottom of the page.

https://mityer.khdlhfjijfrupr.tk/donate.html

I also changed my Avatar to the "Paypal Supporter" icon. I'm not entirely sure if I'm supposed to actually use that Avatar. So would one of you guys that know please let me know if that's OK? There are different terms used in different places to refer to contributions made. I just want to be sure I'm supposed to use that Avatar. Thanks, guys.

Also, if I have crossed some line or violated some unwritten rule with my new thread, please feel free to remove it. I don't want to offend anyone. I'm just really impressed with Lite. I have never financially supported any distro, but I feel strongly enough about Lite to offer what I can.

if you have an old laptop in a closet gathering dust, you can now give it a new life with Linux Lite, the machine I am on every day is a 9 year Dell Inspiron 1501 that had Windows Vista on it, one of the worst things windows ever did, ran slow and made this laptop a miserable experience. We have a desktop with Bill Gates 10 for my wife and son to use for things they have to do. I use this 9 year old laptop with Linux Lite for everything else. The learning curve is changing fast in Linux and you don't have to know everything to use Linux anymore. It's free and you can learn how to do everything on a OS that kicks Windows to the side. You don't have to learn Linux commands anymore, it helps you to keep it updated and runs faster than Bill Gates can walk.
