  Introducing myself...
Posted by: WytWun - 06-04-2017, 07:05 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (7)

So, while I'm new to Lite I've had Linux exposure back to the days of the 1.2.x kernels in a role as a system admin.  Haven't had much desktop Linux experience for quite a few years but Microsoft's recent antics are pushing me in this direction for my private computing requirements.

After spending a couple of weeks sampling a variety of distros, Lite has come out the choice for my needs - which include for use by an elderly relative so that I can remotely support them.  I now administer 4 installations all on Lite 3.4 64bit: a VirtualBox VM on my Windows 7 desktop, a Dell all-in-one and an Acer notebook (both legacy boot), and an Intel NUC (UEFI boot).  The Dell is now with the relative and Teamviewer has been very useful for remote support.

Thanks to m654321 for his UEFI tutorial and thanks to Jerry and co for Lite!

Stellarium is removed when Lite updates is run
Posted by: justme2 - 06-03-2017, 08:49 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

The latest version of Stellarium which will run on my eeePC is 0.11 (MESA version) which I install from a deb file. The version is locked in Synaptic but when I run 'Install updates' Stellarium 0.11 gets removed, including the menu entry. I then have to run the deb installer again. Can I stop this happening?

TIA

Edit: running command apt autoremove wants to remove stellarium and stellarium-data

$ sudo apt autoremove
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libqt4-opengl libqt5opengl5 libqt5serialport5 stellarium
  stellarium-data
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 5 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
After this operation, 161 MB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

PIA Installation with Encrypted Home Directory
Posted by: blmcevers - 06-03-2017, 07:04 PM - Forum: Tutorials - No Replies

Hi,

I am new to Linux Lite (and Linux). I have migrated from Windows OS and hope to never return again.

I have a standard 64bit Linux Lite Installation on a Dell Lattitude E5520, with an encrypted Home Directory. I installed my PIA VPN client per the instructions here:

https://helpdesk.privateinternetaccess.c...p-on-Linux

The installation instructions allowed me to successfully install PIA, yet when I tried to connect, it wouldn't.

I did a google search and found these instructions on how to install PIA with an Encrypted Home Directory:

https://helpdesk.privateinternetaccess.com/hc/en-us/articles/219438217-Installing-the-PIA-App-on-Linux]https://helpdesk.privateinternetaccess.com/hc/en-us/articles/227831828-Installing-the-PIA-app-on-Linux-with-encrypted-home-directories]https://helpdesk.privateinternetaccess.com/hc/en-us/articles/219438217-Installing-the-PIA-App-on-Linux

With the above instructions I was able to successfully connect to my PIA VPN

Hope this helps someone,

Cheers

A few Desktop and update questions
Posted by: paul1149 - 06-02-2017, 10:28 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (15)

I've got several questions that maybe could be cleaned up in one thread. Any help would be appreciated.

  • I just started using workspaces. I can switch them by Ctrl-Alt-<left|right>, or by mouse action. Is it possible to list all open programs in both/either the Panel and/or the Alt-Tab dialog, and thereby switch directly to the desired prog? I know I can do it by middle-click on the desktop, but the desktop is not always visible. I think it's important to have a view of all open progs.
  • I have lost the window snapping function. Toggling settings does not jog it back on. Full disclosure: I installed LXDE, thinking to give it a try, just before this happened. I didn't find a way to invoke it, and I've since uninstalled much of it, but snapping is not back. Is there any way to restore it?
  • Is there a compositor available for LL? I might want to check out some advanced features.
  • Lastly, though not desktop related, I seem to have lost the ability to update LL. Updates is no longer in the Menu. I did configure the new automatic reminders, for twice a week, I believe, but I haven't seen any sign of them in a week, which doesn't seem right. I'm on 3.4, and Upgrade says this is the latest. So can one still update manually?

Thanks and BW.

Problem mounting devices after change uid and gid
Posted by: spiff66 - 06-02-2017, 08:53 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (1)

Hi everyone,
after installation, i change my uid and gid.
After that, if I mount devices (hd partitions or usb stick) with thunar, the device results mounted, but it is empty in thunar (inaccessible), probabily it's a permission problem (udisk2? polkit?)

otherwise
if i use mount command from terminal
sudo mount /dev/sda5 (or other partition)
the partition results correctly mounted and accessible.

any suggestions?
ty all

Hi Everbody!

I recently intalled MAME for some old school gaming. however I need some light and tips on config and running games.
I know you have to download Roms (games) to specific folder...
Can anyone show me how it's done?
I don't know much about using the terminal. I tried searching for folders in MAME but cant's find any!

is anyone using MAME to play games on LL?

What peripheral Hardware do you have that works out of the box?
Posted by: valtam - 06-02-2017, 11:09 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (11)

I'm currently building a collection of peripheral Hardware on our Buy Linux Hardware page that people can choose from.

http://mityer.khdlhfjijfrupr.tk/buylinuxhardware.html

I'm looking for feedback on what hardware you have that works out of the box, especially Printers or Scanners.

It must have the following criteria:

INCLUDES:

Network Adapter PCI/PCI-X/PCI-E
Printers
Scanners (standalone, not part of a printer or multifunction)
Multifunction printers
TV Tuner/Card
Webcams
Wireless Network Devices

1. You bought it in the last 2 years brand new.
2. It must have worked out of the box on Linux Lite 3.x Series only with, no drivers, no extra fiddling, scripts or configuring.
3. If it is a Multifunction center, everything must work out of the box, copy, scan and print.

All we need is the make and model, no extra details eg. Brother HL-2170W or Intel PWLA8492MT

Thank you all in advance Smile
