Lately if I attempt to use the favicons emoticons in this forum in the body of my post, I get the following error message:

Looks to me like there could be a bug in the latest version of Grub.
IMPORTANT: If you are planning to do updates, DON'T. Not until there is more word on this.
Those that have, may see a message similar to the following in their log:
Code: Setting up grub-common (2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.10) ...
update-rc.d: warning: start and stop actions are no longer supported; falling back to defaults
Setting up grub2-common (2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.10) ...
Setting up grub-pc-bin (2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.10) ...
Setting up grub-pc (2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.10) ...
/var/lib/dpkg/info/grub-pc.postinst: line 703: syntax error near unexpected token `fi'
dpkg: error processing package grub-pc (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2
Ubuntu is bound to catch this so please wait for further instructions and don't not update yet if you haven't already.
Stay tuned

have gone round and round. Printer installed fine with usb connection going through routine found via web search. But entirely unable after dozens of pages to find a way to install this printer so it works wirelessly. Cannot find the ip address. The interface on the printer has only 4 buttons and seems to just want to search for a connection, no other menu options. After searching 2-3 minutes it prints out an error page at the bottom of which it says:
<Configuration>
Network Name (SSID) SETUP
Hardware Address (MAC) 28:56:5a:67:49:2b
Communication Mode

Hello! I am a newbie and new to the forum. I am also illiterate as far as coding is concerned, having been a Windows user. I installed Linux lite a couple of days ago, and while mounting partitions, ran into a problem. Although I followed the instructions in the manual, an error message popped up about the disk, and then I couldn't get past the initial screen on boot up - the one with the feather. After that I got a black screen saying
'welcome to emergency mode!' and a bunch of options including entering a root password (which didn't work) and pressing 'control -D'. On doing the last action, I got an error about some 'ext4 not found'.
The forums were full of help that involved a lot of code which I didn't understand. (I'll learn code by and by, but right now I need help!)
So I tried re-installing. Now the opening screen has 2 versions of linux. How do I remove the earlier one?
I would really appreciate help on this! Thank you in advance!

| A tell-tell for the unattended-upgrades process |

I have a habit of performing updates via Synaptic. Sometimes I do this immediately upon starting a session. Often this activity is obstructed and a message appears advising me that only one software management tool is allowed to run at the same time. I have learned that this is invariably due to an active unattended-upgrade process. I am no longer mystified about it.
However, it would still be nice if some kind of tell-tell were to appear somewhere on the screen to advise us when this process is underway. Then, when the upgrade is finished and the tell-tell disappears, we could carry on with the operation that had to be postponed, be it apt-get, dpkg, gdebi, Synaptic, or Installing Updates.
