I've installed Linux Lite on a PC of a colleague. He was happy, but the sound doesn't work. Tomorrow I will visit this colleague to fix the problem. Unfortunatelly I've not the details of the system now. Only this facts, I've saved on my computer:

I'm a volunteer for a Corporation that gives, at no cost, refurbished computer hardware to individuals, schools, veterans, etc.. As for my part, my background is IT with a focus on switching/routing (the COMM Closet end of the wire) and I enjoy, immensely, cherry picking through the donated non-desktop hardware for candidate pieces to offer for sale to help generate some revenue for our operations.

For servers, I've been using a few live linux distros to quickly verify if they are operational or not. I saw the release notice for Linux Lite 3.4 and thought I'd give it a try. What an excellent put together distro. I booted a ten year old Dell PowerEdge 1950 (2007) with two dual core Xeons, 8GB ram, PERC 5/i RAID controller & 2 SAS drives. So maybe I've found a "go to" distro for our needs. It's nice it "sees" the NAS shares on the network out of the box and supports the USB sound adapter I've installed to verify/test sound. I've just started exploring it and maybe it's time to settle on one.

I've given LL a small partition of 2 GB for home, because I use a larger partition for the user files from different linux installations. But the home of LL is running out of space. So I've tried to resize it. I 've copied the hole partition as backup:

I am new to the forum but not new to Linux, but by no means am I an expert.  I was wondering if anyone else has ever seen this problem before.

After installing update to Linux lite, I reboot and when linux loads, I have no wifi. After a lot of playing around I discover that if I shutdown the pc, pull the battery, and then remove power for a couple of minutes, then boot I will have wifi with no problems. but if I do a restart from the log out screen the wifi will not work. I have searched Google for a month or more but I have not found any answers. When the wifi doesn't work, the access point says "Not Authorized". I have tried setting it with ifconfig and iwconfig and of course it doesn't even recognized. But if I do a shut down, pull battery, disconnect power, wait a couple of minutes then boot the PC. I will have wifi when it boots up.

This problem appeared after the last updates but why would pulling power before booting give me wifi but if I restart the pc wifi doesn't work ?  It has me pulling my hair out not being able to fix this problem.

What am I over looking or missing here ? Anyone else ever run into this.  The PC is a HP Sleekbook,    4x AMD A8-4555M APU with Radeon™ HD Graphics, Memory 5570MB (856MB used), running Linux Lite 3.2.

I am asking if people can vote as to whether they are thinking about trying Linux as their desktop OS, or if they already use Linux to vote how long they have used Linux.

If I can get enough votes to make a base line, I will run the poll each year and make a results chart showing growth of Linux amongst deskstop users.

I switched from Linux Mint 18 XFCE to Linux Lite 3.2, because I wanted to test something new.
Started with Ubuntu 6.0something and adored Gnome2 a lot. With Gnome3 I switched to Mint KDE4 and liked it as well.
Did not like KDE5 and thus switched to Mint XFCE.

Strangely, I had to install LL 3.2 twice, somewhere in between it crashed and I had to do the procedure again. The same with my mum's hp notebook (bye bye Windows 10). After the second run LL 3.2 worked flawlessly, on both machines. Upgrade to LL 3.4 worked perfectly. Did something stupid and decided that re-installation of LL 3.4 would be the quickest way. The system stopped when I activated WLAN (started live-system three times). Thus I installed LL 3.2 (again, twice), did the upgrade and have been happy with it since then.

I look forward to following the topics of the other users.

When i want to open more than one file i just type: cat file1 file2 press Enter and the files appear one on top of the other. Is there a way to put a space between these files?  Thanks

 

I got into Linux to install Bitwig Studio, a professional audio DAW. So I finally got JACK down and also installed the low latency kernel.  So my 7 year old AMD Phenon II 955 PC runs really fast with Bitwig and JACK on Linux Lite. I like it much better then Windows 7 and 10. I had trouble installing Linux even though I have a dedicated hard drive. The problem was the edimax wifi adapter and being too far away from the router. I switched to a wired connection and that seemed to solve all the problems for installing. When installing I didn't realize about the swap drive and that has taken 12GB out of 64GB. I'm looking to remove that. So far everything is going smooth..
