Wrong Screen resolution - lost use of monitor even on rebooting
Posted by: newtusmaximus - 03-31-2017, 09:49 PM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (17)

My main desktop on LL3.2 64 bit. Integrated video intel as per main profile.  Was happily running on 1024 x 768.    Opted to try higher resolution via display settings and screen went into x/y oscillations.  Did emergency shut down - holding down off button.  On rebooting, screen still in x/y oscillations totally unusable.

Any ideas please welcomed on how I can change screen resolution back to 1024 x 768  when I can not use screen.  Can it be done via grub and if so how.  Thank you

LL 3.4 x64 - Didn't install nVidia driver on fresh install
Posted by: Ottawagrant - 03-31-2017, 01:43 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (2)

Just wanted to mention that I did a fresh install when LL 3.4 came out this morning. First time this has happened. Installed the OS, rebooted & it didn't install the nVidia 304 legacy driver. Also showed no driver available in the install drivers GUI. First time that ever happened. Just went over to Synaptic & added it manually. So for anyone who has a similar computer. As they say in the Hitchiker's guide - don't panic! Open synaptic, edit < Reload package information. When it's done updating click search < (in the little box put) nvidia & hit enter. Scroll down to find the nvidia driver that best suites your computer. My configuration works best with the 304 driver. As I've mentioned before I will never buy another computer with proprietary drivers, but thank you! to Linux Lite (which works perfectly with this computer) because Windows 10 won't! nVidia classifies my computer as 'old', & I should buy a new one.

  Linux Lite 3.4 Final Released
Posted by: valtam - 03-31-2017, 11:34 AM - Forum: Release Announcements - Replies (38)

Release Announcement

Linux Lite 3.4 Final is now available for download. Linux Lite continues its focus on Security by providing our latest application, Lite Updates Notify. This application is a desktop notification that informs the user of all available updates. You can set Update reminders anywhere from once every hour to once every 3 weeks. Continuing our focus on Security, Lite Welcome has a fresh new look, reminding you after a fresh install of Linux Lite to - Install Updates, Install Drivers and Set a Restore Point. This release also brings 4 new features to Lite Tweaks, Hibernate & Suspend, Login & Logout Options, Manage Save Sessions and zRam. With Hibernate & Suspend, you can select whether or not to show these options on the Logout screen. The Login & Logout Options feature allows the administrator to enable or disable Login & Logout window options. These 2 new features are particularly useful for multi user set ups. zRam is a compressed RAM block device for faster I/O and is perfect for older computers. Also in this release we've included lots of updates to our Lite packages, as well as the usual fixes from the 3.4 Beta.

Presenting Linux Lite 3.4 Final

Lite Updates Notify - A new application for Linux Lite. Lite Updates Notify is a desktop notification that informs the user of all available updates. Menu, Favorites, Install Updates should be run before executing Lite Updates Notify for the first time. A HUGE thank you to Ralphy for his collaboration on this challenging application.

1. Menu, Settings, Lite Updates Notify.

2. Select a notification frequency.

3. When you receive your desktop notification, you will get either of two messages:

This is a notification only. Go to Menu, Favorites, Install Updates if the notification says you have updates to install. This is an optional application, you do not have to use it if you don't want to and it is disabled by default. Please be aware that if there are no Updates, you will only get the 'Your system is up to date' message once, until such a time where Updates become available again.

To set the above Notification theme, go to Menu, Settings, Notifications. Select the theme 'Default'.

16.04.2 Base - Linux Lite 3.4 is based off 16.04.2, however, we do not include the 4.8 kernel Hardware Enablement Stack. The HWE stacks were never meant to be supported for the entire life of the LTS release. In the past, support has been limited between HWE releases. I prefer to offer people the option to switch to one of our custom kernels should you require newer hardware support, not forcefully impose a newer kernel where it is not necessary or where it may drop support for older hardware.

Lite Welcome - Has been improved by recommending people follow a basic 3 step post-install process. Install Updates > Install Drivers > Setting a Restore Point.

Window snapping by default - Dragging windows to the corners and snapping windows which is a feature familiar to Windows users, is now available in Linux Lite 3.4 Thank you to torreydale and others for this suggestion.

Lite Tweaks - Added zRam feature - zRam is a compressed RAM block device for faster I/O. Perfect for older computers. Added Login & Logout Tweaks feature - enable or disable Login window options. Useful for multi user set ups. There will be updates to this feature following the release of 3.4 so look out for that. A huge thank you to Ralphy for these additions.

Updated Inkscape but it didn't update the icon
Posted by: kris84 - 03-31-2017, 09:46 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (12)

Hello, all,

I'm relatively new to Linux, and have been running LinuxLite 3.2 64-bit for about 6 weeks now. It came pre-loaded with Inkscape 0.91. I wanted to upgrade to 0.92 as it's what I use on Windows. Also, I find that the icon for 0.91 is too similar in appearance to other icons (file manager icons for example), so I wanted to get the icon for 0.92 so it's easier to see and I can find it quicker. However, after I upgraded the software via the package manager, everything says it's Inkscape 0.92, but the program menu, favorites, and panel areas still show the old icon. I completely removed all packages, rebooted, and re-installed them, but the result was the same. I checked in my /usr/share/icons folders, and all the inkscape.png files show the new 0.92 icon. Yet somehow it is not displaying that in these areas, so are the icons for the menu and panel stored somewhere else that they need to be replaced manually?

  Freeplane version in repositories
Posted by: dtr1001 - 03-30-2017, 09:29 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

Hello, I'm new to the forums although I have been using linux lite for around 10 months now. I guess the fact that I haven't been here before says a lot about my experinece using Linux Lite - yes, I like it a lot! Now, my problem is that I used to use freemind a lot, but the version in the repositories is an (very) old one so I moved on to Freeplane which I find has some better features. However, again the version in the repositories is 1.3.15-3 while the current version is 1.5.18. If I try to install newer versions I run into library problems. Can the developers have a look into updating these for me or give me some tips on how I can install the most up to date versions myself please? I am currently running Freeplane in a XP VM which isn't ideal. On another note I have hoped that the use of Snap might mean that packaging might become easier - is this an avenue worth persuing?

Thanks and keep up the good work on this fast efficient distribution!

Canon MF4500w Printer Configuration Dependent on Missing Package
Posted by: Jan - 03-30-2017, 02:29 AM - Forum: Printing and Scanning - Replies (16)

Now that I've upgraded to Linux Lite 3.2, once again, my Canon ImageCLASS MF4500w printer is proving tricky to install, so I'm hoping someone on the forum here can point me in the right direction!  Smile

The printer driver that is required is not listed under the Canon drivers, so when I plug my USB printer cable into the computer, I get the message, "Missing Printer Driver".  So, I went to the Canon website and downloaded the Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V330_uk_EN.tar.gz  driver and then opened the Terminal inside the Downloads folder.  I entered the following commands:

tar -zxvf Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V330_uk_EN.tar.gz

cd Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V330_uk_EN/32-bit_Driver/Debian

ls

sudo dpkg -i cndrvcups-common_3.70-1_i386.deb

After I entered the above command, this is what I got:

Selecting previously unselected package cndrvcups-common.
(Reading database ... 219163 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to unpack cndrvcups-common_3.70-1_i386.deb ...
Unpacking cndrvcups-common (3.70-1) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of cndrvcups-common:

Errors were encountered while processing:

What commands should I enter to correct the dependency problems and get the missing package?

  Update fail
Posted by: thoughtinstinct - 03-28-2017, 12:51 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (3)

Hello

I tried updating today and it showed me there are updates available but then an error occurred and was pointed to /var/logs/llupdates.log

Code:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

I tried again to look if there are updates available but it couldn't fetch updates. Tried one more time and now it says my system is up to date and lite widget shows "Your system was recently updated" although no update has been done recently.( for 3 days )

  Google Earth LL3.2 64bit
Posted by: newtusmaximus - 03-27-2017, 10:47 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

Just converting the HP desktop to LL3.2 64bit.
Desperately need Google Earth to work.  Had it working on LL2.8 32bit.
Have been faffing around for more than an hour trying various online suggestions - all to no avail.
Problem seem to hinge on lsb-core and  its other family; mta etc.

Appreciate that LL does not support this but need to find a way around the problem for work.
TIA
