Confusion with WiFi speeds- can someone clarify please? ...
Posted by: m654321 - 11-27-2016, 01:22 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (8)

I'm renewing my broadband package with my telecom provider and the issue of connection speeds came up - of course the faster the connection speed the more you pay.

I then had a look at my own connection speeds with LL:
- the information for an active network connection shows 300Mb/s (iwlwifi driver) = 37.50MB/s

This is important as our broadband provider provides a cheaper package with speeds of up to 17MB/s, and a more expensive one with speeds up to 38MB/s.

Then I had a look at the my actual download speeds e.g. downloading TV programmes, podcasts...
- the information shows actual download speeds to be only between 165kB/s and 450kB/s = 0.17MB/s to 0.45MB/s.

This means the actual speeds in MB/s are between 80 and 220 times slower than the active network connection information indicates.
This is confusing - can someone clarify this disparity ...

Many thanks
Mike

Virtual Machines: query relating to 'runtimes' for WindowsOS guest in LL3.2 host
Posted by: m654321 - 11-27-2016, 10:38 AM - Forum: Off Topic - No Replies

I've been running a Windows OS virtual machine for a while on an LL host.

When I set up the VM, the only runtimes that seems to have installed appears to be 'Silverlight' and ~net 4.6.1 (or an earlier version).

Therefore, do I need to download & install other 'runtimes' for the VM (e.g.  Java 8, ~.net 4.6.2, Air & Shockwave) or does the VM's software take over and replace these?

I have searched the internet but haven't found an answer to this - does anyone know?

Many thanks for any help...

  Repository Server Upgraded
Posted by: valtam - 11-27-2016, 06:28 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (4)

Today I upgraded our repository server that serves all our Lite Software and ISO releases.
I'm pleased to report the upgrade went very smoothly. This will now serve us through to April 2019.

On Jan 1st 2017, Ubuntu are strengthening APT repositories by ditching SHA-1. I've already corrected our repo in anticipation for this change, that's not to say there may be an issue or two come Jan 1st with updates. This is just a heads-up in-case Install Updates fail on that day. I'll be monitoring everything extremely closely and be poised to pounce if anything needs adjusting.

More info on that here - http://news.softpedia.com/news/ubuntu-to...0462.shtml

  No Updates Available
Posted by: Earthenware - 11-26-2016, 10:21 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (7)

Ever since I removed Google Chrome and MySQL a few weeks ago, the software updater has been telling me that there are "No Updates Available".

In order to fully purge that pesky MySQL I found some esoteric commands on the Ubuntu site (no, I don't remember) and I think I may have affected the update sources or done something else nasty.

Is there any way to return the update function to its "default" settings without having to reinstall LL altogether?

llupdates.log shows no record when I attempt updates now.

20auto-upgrades.ucf-dist' in directory /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/ error fix
Posted by: valtam - 11-25-2016, 10:32 AM - Forum: Security & Bug Fixes - Replies (4)

This error is safe to ignore, but if you want to get rid of the message:

Code:
N: Ignoring file '20auto-upgrades.ucf-dist' in directory '/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension

When running sudo apt-get update from the terminal, this is the simple fix:

Code:
sudo rm -rf /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/20auto-upgrades.ucf-dist

  Help Manual Suggestions wanted
Posted by: valtam - 11-25-2016, 03:13 AM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (30)

I'm going to spend some time between now and 3.4 to add to the Help Manual. If there is anything I have overlooked, please let me know in this thread.

- An example of a good suggestion - the recent "Lite Software - Change Repository Location" suggestion from another thread.
- An example of a bad suggestion - "Please include a tutorial for installing KDE"

Any suggestion must be relevant to what we already offer.

Thank you Smile
