Posted by: TMG1961 - 09-14-2016, 01:20 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (11)

Posted this in wrong section, marked the other post as solved and opened this one in correct section.

When i want to restore a folder or file from the trash bin i get the following error message
items in the trash may not be modified

Have no clue what is causing this, didn't have it before.
Any idea how to get this fixed?

Optional Widget for Linux Lite 3.2
Posted by: valtam - 09-14-2016, 08:15 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (58)

I'm thinking of introducing an optional widget in Linux Lite 3.2 This won't run unless you want it to.

It will have very basic, minimal information. Something you can quick glance at.

Most importantly, it will contain a much desired update notification as seen in the screenshot.
The update function is purely informational, it cannot be clicked on, it serves as an important reminder to update your pc.
Memory use is around 17mb, with room for improvement.

Interested to hear feedback on this optional inclusion.

SystemD Manager not showing all services
Posted by: LL-user - 09-13-2016, 02:41 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (12)

Hi,

Inspired by paylepiramida I had a closer look at services and the SystemD Manger on a test install of LL 3.0 64-bit.

It seems to me that not all services are showing up in the SystemD Manager. I was specifically looking for the samba services...

What am I missing here?

Thanks for any input Smile

  Partition alignment prompt at install
Posted by: linuxnewb - 09-11-2016, 11:46 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (4)

I've been trying to clean install Linux Lite3.0 in my external hard drive(Seagate2TB) but it keeps prompting me with this message:

The partition /dev/sdb1 assigned to / starts at an offset of 3584 bytes from the minimum alignment for this disk, which may lead to very poor performance.

Since you are formatting this partition, you should correct this problem now by realigning the partition, as it will be difficult to change later. To do this, go back to the main partitioning menu, delete the partition, and recreate it in the same position with the same settings. This will cause the partition to start at a point best suited for this disk.

I've created a new partition with Gparted in ext4. Reformatted to ext4 and it still gives me that warning... Any solutions?

Grub does not recognize my wireless Logitech keyboard
Posted by: Crazy Larry - 09-11-2016, 07:00 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (5)

Since you're testing with Grub......My biggest complaint is that Grub does not recognize my
wireless Logitech  keyboard.  If I want to make different selections with Grub I have to plug in an old wired keyboard.    I know this is  LL  site  but just letting you know.  It's irritating.

which .services are safe to dissable via systemd
Posted by: pavlepiramida - 09-11-2016, 05:16 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (10)

So this is my blame

11.728s nmbd.service
        10.427s samba-ad-dc.service
          7.622s NetworkManager-wait-online.service
          5.707s dev-sda1.device
          5.231s ModemManager.service
          3.881s accounts-daemon.service
          2.788s lightdm.service
          2.758s smbd.service
          2.708s NetworkManager.service
          2.558s networking.service
          2.526s apparmor.service
          2.296s grub-common.service
          2.035s irqbalance.service
          1.950s polkitd.service
          1.891s systemd-logind.service
          1.887s virtualbox-guest-utils.service
          1.812s ondemand.service
          1.645s thermald.service
          1.606s gpu-manager.service
          1.565s lvm2-monitor.service
          1.539s lm-sensors.service
          1.483s console-kit-log-system-start.service
          1.476s pppd-dns.service
          1.288s rsyslog.service
          1.278s upower.service
          1.231s keyboard-setup.service
          1.046s console-setup.service

Now I never used systemd (then again,im not too familiar with Linux too) but Im asking if there is anyone who can help me identify services which are safe to disable.
Id like to make this system lean and stable as much as I can but Im afraid to mess around systemd (dont want to lose stability or brake the system).

  BOINC Lite
Posted by: seasoned_geek - 09-11-2016, 12:28 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (2)

BOINC participants around the world have long been searching for a BOINC Lite distro package. All this package needs is:

  1. Basic GUI Desktop for single monitor with no frills
  2. Prompt for installing NVidia drivers during installation
  3. BOINC
  4. Text editor with optional spell check
  5. minimal browser

Currently BOINC participants are made to suffer. YABU (Yet Another Ubuntu) distros have been vicious when it comes to NVidia support for BOINC (GPU) users. Cryptic path to finding which driver actually works, then an update comes out for the distro and the currently installed driver doesn't work. Nope, the newer version doesn't work either, you have to go back quite a few versions to find one which works. Next update, start entire process over again. It is why many BOINC participants _never_ update a machine until BOINC projects themselves move so far away from the version they have their machine is no longer actively participating.

A BOINC Lite version would be as lite as it gets. Definitely need a 64-bit version as these machines tend to have a lot of RAM. No need for email, GUI word processor, picture viewing/editing or music software. In truth, it should be probably be the release before an official beta because it allows people to test out the hardware support without too much other stuff getting in the way. BOINC can basically set a load from 10-100% on a box so one can test out things like temp control.
