One Wish for Linux Lite 2.2
Posted by: dayooper - 11-18-2014, 05:19 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (3)

I only have one wish for the new Linux Lite 2.2 operating system. Would love to see the Ubuntu Software Center added as a new program. The existing Software Additions program and Synaptic program have limitations. Getting the Ubuntu Software Center would be an early Christmas present.

Help! Blue Screen Appears When Booting Up
Posted by: dayooper - 11-18-2014, 04:58 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (3)

When booting up I'm getting a blue screen which says, "GNU Grub version 2.02~beta2-9". There are 4 options to choose from. At the bottom of screen it states, "Use up or down arrows to select which entry is highlighted. Press enter to boot the selected OS, 'e' to edit the commands before booting or 'c' for command line".

I selected the first option and hit "enter". It went to a black screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left corner. Couldn't get off the black screen, so I shutdown. Restarted and ran the two "memtest" options and passed both tests. I did not mess with the advanced option. Would appreciate your help to resolve this problem.

  [SOLVED] Linux lite system requirements
Posted by: cypher000 - 11-18-2014, 02:25 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (6)

Linux Lite version 2.00. Somehow I do not think I am going to be able to install Linux Lite 2.00 (or maybe any of the older versions) as my system is not good enough. I run a Dell Optiplex GX 260. Win XP Pro OS.  Processor is Pentium 4. 1.80 GHZ and the maximum RAM I have and can have is 2 Gigabyte. My Hard drive is a mere 20 Gigabytes and I have only the factory installed CDRom drive.

I have been trying unsucessfully, to get hold of an actual CD but it seems that there are none available, though I believe the older versions were originally all on CD, running at about 500MGB. Jerry has been very good to me and opened up a few avenues, but I am not happy that any of them are actually on the required CD. I think now, that version 1.0.8 might have met the need here, but am not sure. Have you more knowledgeable guys got an opinion based on what I have said about my system specs? Hope so. Regards Walt.

  New WYSIWYG Editor
Posted by: valtam - 11-18-2014, 03:32 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (3)

Our WYSIWYG editor for quick reply decided it didn't want to work anymore so we are using a new one that is now fully integrated into the Forums. Only thing that does not seem to be working is the WYSIWYG Editor in pm's and custom signatures, no biggie, you can use this resource for a full list of BBCODES

  Install updates error
Posted by: maccool - 11-17-2014, 02:31 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (20)

Tried to run Install Updates from the menu. Has some sort of error message and that I was supposed to run some command line program. What I really got out of the message was that the window was going to close and it did before I could get down all the information on what it was suggesting I do.

Couldn't you make the window close on me hitting the enter key or something so I could take down the message.

So, what do I do now? Re-install the whole thing and pray?

Website is now using a CDN
Posted by: valtam - 11-17-2014, 09:32 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (6)

In an effort to make the entire LL website load faster, have better security and increase performance across the board we are now using Cloudfare as a CDN. Hopefully this will speed things up like the Forums which can be slow at times.

What is a CDN?

A content delivery network (CDN) is a system of distributed servers (network) that deliver webpages and other Web content to a user based on the geographic locations of the user, the origin of the webpage and a content delivery server.

In layman’s terms, a CDN is a server in a country that enables people in that country to access the website much faster than having to fetch it from where the website is actually hosted. With Cloudfare, there are servers all over the world thus giving people in all locations much better website performance. eg. if you live in France, there is a copy of this website in France now enabling much quicker loading times.

You'll also notice a new Search tool at the bottom of each page, this is mainly for the main LL site. I know this may seem superfluous on the forums as there is already a search function, but there is only a choice to enable it for the domain, not certain areas of a website.

Would like to hear if over the next week or so the Forums especially are working faster for you.

  Cloning drives
Posted by: ChrisL - 11-17-2014, 01:21 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

I would like to clone my primary hard drive onto a larger drive (which I will then use as my primary).

I don't want to back-up so I can restore later.  Will Clonzilla clone in this manner a full working drive?

Looks like it, but ?? I am not totally convinced.  It also says "Boot loader, including grub (version 1 and version 2) and syslinux, could be reinstalled. " so maybe that would need to be done before the drive is fully functional? If so is that difficult to do?

If there is a better tool I am open to suggestions.  Thanks,
                                                                                                Chris
