| Installation crash |

First time user of any Linux. Just for fun, I decided to try Linux Lite to see if it could breathe new life into a very old Windows XP Acer Travelmate laptop, rather than bin it.
Originally a Travelmate 242lc, but slightly upgraded with a Pentium4 2.8; 40GB HDD; 1250MB RAM.
Various attempts to install failed. Tried to run Gparted iso. This failed until I tried an old version which worked fine and I deleted all old partitions.
Linux Lite installer then proceeded - but only if I used the inbuilt partition manager to do 'something else' which was make a single large 39GB root partition, followed by 800MB swap.
So, the process is very slow with this processor and drive. Each attempt takes about 3 hours to reach the crash point.
Copying files completes, Configuring System locales crashes at configuring time zone; no bug report appears when crash window is closed (message says it should!)
Time shown in bios boot screen kept reverting to default, so changed CMOS battery as found to be almost flat, but that made no difference to install crash.
Any suggestions?

Hi, all,
I feel fairly confident with Linux now that I can research this problem on my own, but may still need to ask for help. That said, I do have a work-around. I post this for now in case anyone else has the same problem.
- Description: On inserting (mounting) a USB stick, sometimes there appears to be (significantly) less space than ought to be available. Note: This is not the usual case of a USB stick having a little less space than advertized. On deleting existing files, the USB stick does not show any additional space. Operation so far only tested on Thunar (the file manager); not tested yet using the terminal. File system is FAT-32.
- Hardware (laptop): Only seems to be happening on one of my two otherwise identical laptops. Possible hardware fault?
- Hardware (USB stick): Kingston DataTraveller G4 16Gb (rated as Linux-compatible). FAT-32.
- Software (file manager): Thunar 1.6.11
- Linux Kernel: 4.4.0-110-generic (LL 3.6 64bit).
- Hypothesis: Due to an as yet unknown cause, although the files are removed from the list, the space is not being freed up on the USB stick. As a result, repeated deletion is resulting is ever-decreasing available space for file storage.
- Work-around: Carefully reformat the USB stick using GParted (Menu/System/Partition Drives). Carefully, because you don't want to format your hard drive or partitions! Unmounting and re-formatting USB stick (to FAT-32 again) frees up the space. Again, not tested formatting from terminal.
Two other common faults have been identified on this specific laptop's USB ports with this make and model of USB stick (for completeness):-
- As reported previously, Linux doesn't appear to like any USB extension cable I have tried (be aware). Work-around: Don't use USB extension cables!
- When mounting a Kanguru Flashtrust USB3.0 SecureFirmware USB stick (8Gb), USB sticks mounted afterwards report read-only until fresh boot. (This happens in Thunar; but also the default file manager in Ubuntu/Unity.) Work-around: Reboot!

Hi
I want to learn more about Linux in general!
I've been (and still Am) a Windows user until I discovered LL which gave a new life to my old laptop some time ago, after I bought a new one with Win10 (8GB RAM, i5core CPU,Nvidia bla bla bla).
My old laptop (the one I'm writing this now) is 11 years now so I have to thank the developers of Linux in general and LL in particular for providing a OS for a machine that otherwise would be useless.
I'm not a computer geek, just a simple user so Linux (terminal/command lines) are very confusing.
With that in mind what free ebooks recommendations would you guys suggest so I can improve my skills with linux.
Download links would be appreciated.
Thank You

An update appeared to be removing VLC. I reinstalled VLC, but then after reboot, I couldn't get to the login screen. Using the command line, I went to a systemback restore from a month ago. I ran updates again, and saved the log. VLC is being removed. See the attached log file.

Hey
I just created a Firefox account (I have a Google/Chrome one for my other home laptop ) since I'm using the browser more now mainly at work.
Was wondering if being logged-on with the Sync option on increases browser RAM usage.
I ask this because I only have 2GB of RAM on the laptop I use Firefox.
Thank you

| Scanner causes freeze |

I am the ultimate Linux newbie. I managed to install Linux Lite on my old Toshiba Satellite
A105 and connected my old scanner to it (CanoScan N670U), but found that using Simple Scan caused the computer to freeze. It had only a total of 1GB memory installed, so I upgraded it to the maximum - 2GB, and installed SANE, but it would scan only part of a page of text when set for "Color". When I set SANE for "Text" it started scanning, then the computer froze, just as with Simple Scan. The version of Linux Lite on the computer is 3.2 (I run the upgrade utility whenever I use this computer.)
Is the problem that there is still not enough memory for scanning to function on this old laptop, or is there something I'm doing wrong? Thanks for any help.

I can't seem to log in on my blogger page from this device. So I've been searching for solutions on the Internet and found BloGTK. The last update is very outdated and the original site is not accessible.
Are there any Bloggers here who allready cracked this nut??
