Hi
For months I have been testing various distros, most are very much the same, I was anti Ubuntu derivatives until I tried Linux Lite. I am really impressed so far, nothing has failed or caused an issue and it feels right. Well done to the developers, a really nice OS.

Linux Boots from DVD, but will not boot from my Hard Drive

:-\
Linux Lite OS has helped me rescue my old PC, making it somewhat usable again.
The good news is that Linux does boot.
Unfortunately, I can't load programs because I need the admin password.
I created an admin user, successfully logged in as an admin user with a password that I chose.
However, the password is not the password needed to install any software.
After shutting down my PC, all the settings, including the printer, is lost when I login again.
Before loading Linux, I completely reformatted my HD that is 450GB.
When rebooting to my HD, I get the message "No boot device found."
I tried created partitions and reformatting within Linux, but I probably only made things worse.
I'm thinking that my Hard Drive may be unrecoverable at this point.
Maybe someone can help me choose the right parameters to fix it or test it to see if it can be salvaged.
I do have an 100GB external drive that does successfully mounts and allows me to save files.
My printer is an Epson ET-2750 that does not have a driver, but the Workforce 1100 driver gets me by.
Any help on getting my netbook to boot from the Hard Drive and allow me to add software would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading this post.

Deja Dup could not back up the following files.
/home/coastie/.gvfs
/home/coastie/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/home
I can open .gvfs as root only and nothing is there. I cannot open the second file.
I had a similar problem before solved by [member=6629]ralphy[/member] http://mityer.khdlhfjijfrupr.tk/forums/other/.../#msg31049
What are these files? Should delete them or just tell Deja Dup ignore them too?

Hi. I'm a noob, so I'm sorry if I appear stupid, but can anyone help me?
At native res. (1080 x 1920, 60Hz) the screen flashes, seemingly at random.
At 1080 x 1920 24 Hz it's okay, but frames are missing, of course.
At 1080 x 1920 other speeds, pic a little blurry and flashes.
Same problem when I tried Ubuntu.
All works fine with XP.
Mobo is Trigem/Advent, chipset: i848/ i865, i865p
Graphics ATI 128MB, DVI out
Screen is Panasonic TV, HDMI in

I get emails every week from people from all over the world. Just thought I would share with you one of them of the type that I regularly get.
Quote:Hello Jerry,
Thank you for the information and for taking the time to reply to my email. I will try older versions of Linux Lite in this machine hoping to find one that will work.
I want to take the opportunity to thank you, your staff and the Linux Lite community for creating and maintaining this great piece of software.
As a hobby I help friends, family and people I know with their computers. Very often I have to work with machines that were built a long time ago with hardware that over the years have become obsolete and is no longer possible to upgrade the software inside these machines to their latest versions but that other than that are still in very good working condition. At this pace programmed obsolescence would inevitably force the owners of these computers to have to buy new ones. Fortunately thanks to your good work it is possible to breath new life into these machines by installing your OS on them.
For most of the people I know, switching to a “different” OS is a very daunting thing to do. The simplicity and ease of use of your software helps in the transition. I am no computer expert but I have managed to install your software successfully in many aged computers for the joy of their owners. Sometimes I assemble machines from pieces of old hardware that I get in second hand markets for little money and I install Linux Lite on them. When I have to provide maintenance to a computer, I leave one of these computers with Linux Lite as a replacement while I do the work, in the hope that by experiencing the new software will lead to new converts willing to adopt Linux Lite and then move on to use it in their own machines.
I also buy old laptops (netbooks) and install Linux Lite on them and then give them as presents to people who cannot afford a computer or take them with me when I go on holidays to countries where computers are still expensive and leave them there, in the hands of people who would otherwise not have a chance to have access to computer technology. This is my small contribution to try to close the gap left behind by progress as we run to introduce new technology while the old is still usable.
Once again, thank you for doing what you do which in turn allows me do what I do to help spread the use of computer technology.
Cheers,
Marco Vargas

How to selectively update / revert updates?

Hi, all,
Is there a way to specifically either block a single update item (or set of items), or to revert as such?
For example, in the past (on Windows) I've had the odd occasion in which an update of LibreOffice has stopped a key macro running properly in a workbook I use constantly. This seems to happen from time to time. I had got around that by installing a portableapps version in a veracrypt container; so whenever the update presented this problem, I could quickly swap back to the previous version.
In LL, an obvious solution is to update my old test unit, and then *not* update LibreOffice on the main unit if the problem should recur. But at present, I only know how to update all or nothing - rather than omit specific updates if the test shows there's an issue.
I hope that's clear.
Many thanks.

[SOLVED] Change in Desktop icon appearance - is this anything to worry about?

Every now and then the appearance of LibreOffice and/or other icons changes on my Desktop screen. The new appearance may last a while, sometimes only a short time, but the icons always seem to revert back to their normal appearance. This link shows what happens sometimes on one of my laptops: https://imgur.com/a/u8uly
If you look at these two screenshots, the first shows the normal appearance of 3 x LibreOffice icons and 1 x *.jpg file.
The second picture shows the appearance they sometimes acquire on rebooting.
Has anyone else observed this? Is it anything to worry about?
