  Perhaps a CVE log?
Posted by: trinidad - 01-23-2018, 05:12 PM - Forum: Linux Lite Software Development - Replies (1)

We can use apt-get changelog 'package name' and see the pertinent CVEs, but given that CVEs involving Meltdown and Spectre involve an evolving and growing list of applications it would be preferable to just list the CVEs with a date limitation like ^2018-01-01. Any ideas out there? Maybe have to create a python based app and script? Could prove to be a sensible project for the future. Would save reading for affected packages from the CVE first.

  Alias your Specter Meltdown Checker
Posted by: trinidad - 01-21-2018, 05:37 PM - Forum: Desktop Customization - Replies (11)

Since kernel changes, mitigations, and so forth are probably going to be nagging at us for quite a while a simple functional shortcut to the spectre-meltdown-checker in nice to have. Aliasing the commnd and saving to .bashrc is probably the most efficient way to make the application more convenient.

Open a terminal and enter:    sudo nano ~/.bashrc
Scroll down to where you see alias listed.
Below the last alias line listed add the following:
alias smck='cd spectre-meltdown-checker/;chmod +x spectre-meltdown-checker.sh;sudo ./spectre-meltdown-checker.sh'
Hit Control X, then Y, then Enter to save.
Exit the terminal.
Re-open the terminal and at the prompt type:  smck
Enter your sudo password and spectre-meltdown-checker will run.
Since the alias is added to .bashrc the command smck (for which I found no other unique instances in bash) will run the spectre-meltdown-checker for you.

Simple and clean and sensible since it is a terminal app to begin with.

TC

You may also alias the Ubuntu commands and Rok's memory leak checker in the same way.

i use alias ubusmck and roksmck.

Hi
when I click Home folder icon in the tray its window opens in top left of the screen.
How can it be made to open in the centre of the screen, or prefer, wherever on the screen I opened it the prior time ?

"Clear scrollback" function not working for the LX Terminal in LL3.6
Posted by: m654321 - 01-20-2018, 09:16 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

I wish to clear all the command-line stored in the Terminal. I'm using LL3.6, the LX Terminal version being 0.2.0.

In an attempt to clear the backlog of stored command-line, I opened Terminal, clicked on "Edit", then "Clear scrollback".
On reboot, I opened Terminal, but pressing the arrows keys reveals that the backlog of stored command-line was not deleted.

How do I go about this?

  Another one for LL.

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a nice life! Smile

I recently came across this article at Fossybytes.com titled "10 Best Lightweight Linux Distros For Old Computers | 2018 Edition" in which its author, and co-founder of the site Adarsh Verma talks about "Which are the best lightweight Linux distributions for 2018?"

I started to read it and it just happens that LL is mentioned in third place, and the author says:

Quote:It’s a great Ubuntu-based lightweight Linux OS that’s based on LTS releases. It comes loaded with all the popular and useful applications like Mozilla Firefox, LibreOffice suite, Thunderbird email client, GIMP graphics editor, VLC media player, etc. It means that with Linux Lite, you’re in for an out-of-the-box functional Linux desktop experience. Linux Lite’s menu might remind some people of Windows XP. The beginner-friendly and lightweight Xfce desktop environment make things easier.

Overall, Linux Lite manages to do something that other popular Linux distributions struggle matching. Even after maintaining a lightweight stature, Linux Lite comes with all major tools and delivers an uncompromised performance

He even says that
Quote:It’s also one of my personal favorite Linux distros.

At the bottom of the article author gives some final words, he says:
Quote:keeping in mind the easy installation and hassle-free experience, I’ll recommend you to use Bodhi Linux, Ubuntu MATE, or Linux Lite on your old computer.

So I think it is great seeing this kind of articles around the web talking big words and recommending LL as a great choice of a distro.

Here's the article https://fossbytes.com/best-lightweight-linux-distros/  in case anyone wants to read it and share it so more and more people get to know about what a great distro LL is.

Well, that's it, I figured you people would like to know about this, so I thought of sharing the good news Smile

Would you consider a default image software change in later versions off LL?
Posted by: Vera - 01-19-2018, 06:29 PM - Forum: Linux Lite Software Development - Replies (8)

Hi [member=2]Jerry[/member]

My question relates to image and image manipulations. I love GIMP for advanced image processing and graphic design. It's great, and I was using it even before switching to LL.

But if all the user is seeking to do is crop or resize via GUI, the default ImageMagick package is not very user-friendly. I mean, it can be done but it's frustrating to use. Sometimes I even do that via Gimp instead, just because the GUI is so much better with GIMP, but for cropping and resizing I don't need the full functionality and long load time that comes with GIMP.

Finally, I decided to browse the Synaptic package manager to install an alternative for simple image manipulations on my machine. I installed gThumb. It is so much faster to use in the GUI than ImageMagick. It's a lot more intuitive, and certainly more modern-looking.

In a side-by-side comparison, I definitely feel that newbies would find gThumb so much easier to use as a GUI than ImageMagick when seeking to resize or crop and then save the result to file. Would you please consider evaluating gThumb for possible use in a future version of the LL distro? If not, I understand - you are very busy. I do feel it would make a positive change though.
