Encrypted disk/Encrypt Home folder option stalls...volume control not working

I've never tried encrypting any Hard Drive or SSD i've ever owned so I thought I'd try it with Linux Lite 3.6 for kicks...I use it everyday and I remembered how easy it seemed to be from the options I saw at install. I ticked the encrypt Volume or Hard Disk and the LVM option also ticked...entered the PW and then got to the section for username and login PW and ticked the encrypt home folder options...everything installs it seems then it gets to the "creating user" part of the progress bar...and it hangs...goes nowhere....i thought maybe it was "encrypting" the drive so I let it do its thing....4 hours later and install from a dvd and USB drive and the same thing...hits the "creating user" part and just stalls....no HDD activity at all. So i tried Mint 18.3 with the exact same options and pw's...got to the "creating user" part during install...5 seconds later it gets passed it and in 7 minutes or less I have a newly installed mint with disk encryption and home folder encryption.
what could be the issue? is this a bug? could it be the laptop i'm using? it's an older 2007-2009 hp but it took mint 18.3 just fine with an SSD...works perfect...pops right along
also...this is probably the most common issue amongst the lubuntu/ubuntu issues in that...the volume control icon has never worked...i go into the audio properties and enable the hdmi and that part is fine...i can control youtube with their players volume control or the audio properties in alsa/pavucontrol...i've tried every trick that i've come across online to get it working to no avail...uninstalling...reinstalling....going into the taskbar properties and adding another volume control icon...zip....using an athlon 5350 mini pc to no avail...lite or mint seem to be the only distro's that let this little pc move right along...others seem to slow it down...i could just open pavucontrol/alsa and volume up or down that way but for insight...i thought i'd see if I'm missing something simple to get the volume icon working again
neither one of these issues is a deal breaker....the encrypting drive thing is just something i came across and thought it needed a heads up...the volume is just annoying but i'll live if it doesn't work
thanks

Previous restore points and admin password

I noticed when I went back to an earlier restore point that i required the OLD password for the admin user i had set up. I make a list of the passwords that I use so this was not an issue, however no doubt in future there may be a point whereby the OLD password is forgotten particularly if the youth using the computer elects to change the pw.
So I thought I should find out in advance, what can you do if after updating you had to go back to a much earlier restore point and you didn't have the correct admin password? Is there a way to still "get in"?
I think in another post someone eluded to a user "admin" as not being the real admin and if so, what pw would this "real" admin respond to?
OR
what would one do in the above situation where you want to restore to the earlier point, but don't have the proper pw?

After updating LL 3.4 videos won't play & no sound (now upgrade to LL 3.8)

Not sure why this is happening as it has not (yet) happened on the other older computers. When I performed the LL updates for LL 3.4 on a Toshiba Satellite A-210 (RAM-2GB) the study videos that I have in various folders would not open or play. I performed the update today, Jan. 10.
VLC would open for a quick second then close again. Also the start-up and shut down sounds were not audible. If I recall correctly I did try You Tube and it did work, it was simply the downloaded study videos that did not. I went back to a restore point I made 3 days ago and the issue was the same, no video or sound, so I went back to the next restore point which was Oct. 24, 2017. Both You Tube and downloaded videos work fine at that much earlier restore point.
So for now I have left it at the Oct restore point, BUT am wondering - do I simply NOT do any further updates or is there some info I can be getting, like a system report, at both this earlier restore point and then doing the updating process again and IF the sound and video loss is there again get a system report? and then ask for advice?
I have only realized now that perhaps I should not have deleted the 2 most recent restore points, however I did so as to not think these were good restore points in future.

Hi Guys,
I've recently downloaded a program as a zip file, extracted it OK but I can only run it from commandline. I'd like a desktop shortcut icon for this but have drawn a blank on all my web searches etc. inc on this forum. There are various tutorials for other Linux distros but they all look different & I've no idea which to use. So does anyone know how it's done ? Thanks.

Security of encrypted home folder vs. Veracrypt
|

Hi forum.
I have set up a Dell D620 with LL where the default user (me, the one I use on daily basis) have the home folder encrypted (during creation of user).
I have also being a user of Veracrypt trying to figure out how to use Veracrypt on Linux. Exept for some character encodings for fat/fat32 and had some trouble with ntfs getting bad, I have figured most out to the extent that led me use the program at a daily basis.
Why? Because I have all those files on a laptop and I have that laptop dragging around when traveling around, so in the event of theft, I don't wan't private letters or other any kind of critical information getting in hands of criminals. Simply as that.
Therefore I have thaugt of something. Using Veraccryp takes time to mount, and why not just store those files on the encrypted home folder of user and just forget about Veracrypt? It sure cause less hazzle.
But the big question - how secure is critical files that lays inside an encrypded home folder compared to a Veracrypt file container?
I assume for an average burglar, it doesn't matter because he's probably not the most clever guy anyway. But if that burglar hands it ower to an individual that have the tools to crack passwords - assume same password strength - what is least risky place to store critical files.
Thanks in advance
